Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Dashboard

The hum of the car engine filled the tense silence as Arthur navigated the winding suburban roads away from the chapel. He kept one hand firmly on the steering wheel while using the other to stroke Lily’s soft blond hair. The little girl had finally stopped crying, though her breathing remained shallow and hitched every few seconds.
"Are we safe now, daddy?" Lily whispered, her small voice barely audible over the sound of the tires rolling against the asphalt.
"We are safe, sweetheart, I promise you," Arthur answered, forcing a calm, reassuring smile onto his face despite the sheer panic gnawing at his insides. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. Daddy is here."
Lily nodded slowly, resting her head against the passenger door and clutching the crumpled photograph against her chest. Arthur glanced over at the image of his late wife, Sarah, smiling warmly in a sunlit garden—the exact same woman Claire had spent the past year desperately trying to erase and impersonate.
When Arthur had first met Claire through a mutual dating app two years ago, she had worn heavy bangs and dark sunglasses, claiming to be sensitive to light. Over time, through subtle cosmetic procedures, hair dye, and relentless psychological conditioning, Claire had transformed her physical appearance to mimic Sarah’s facial structure. Arthur had been blinded by grief, easily manipulated into seeing what he desperately wanted to believe.
His phone suddenly buzzed violently in the center console, lighting up the dark interior with an incoming text message from an unknown number. Arthur reached over and swiped the screen, his eyes scanning the glowing words displayed in bold font.
The message read: “You think you escaped, Arthur? Check your bank accounts and your home security feeds right now. You have nothing left.”
Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He pulled the car over sharply to the side of the quiet residential street, throwing the transmission into park. With trembling fingers, he unlocked his smartphone and opened his mobile banking application.
The screen blinked briefly before displaying a zero balance across every single checking and savings account he owned. The corporate trust, the personal reserve funds, even his college savings account for Lily had been completely drained within the last twenty minutes.
"She took everything," Arthur muttered, his voice hollow and devoid of all hope as the phone slipped from his numb fingers onto the floor mat.
He leaned forward, resting his forehead against the steering wheel as the crushing weight of destitution settled over him. He was a successful architect just hours ago; now he was a penniless outcast with a terrified child and no place to sleep.

Before he could process the full scale of the disaster, a loud shattering sound echoed from the rear of the car, followed immediately by Lily letting out a piercing scream of pure terror.
