Chapter 10 - The Edge of the Abyss

The howling wind whipped fiercely through the shattered upper chamber of the lighthouse as flames licked hungrily up the wooden beams of the lower staircase. Arthur stood over the edge of the open balcony, breathing heavily, his hands bleeding from glass cuts and bruises.

Hanging by her fingertips over a sheer two-hundred-foot drop into the raging ocean was Elena, her dark hair blowing wildly across her pale face. Her manicured nails scraped desperately against the slick, moss-covered stone ledge, unable to find a secure grip.

"Arthur! Arthur, please! Help me up!" Elena shrieked, her voice cracking with raw, unfiltered terror as she looked down into the churning black waves below. "We can make a deal! I know where the rest of the offshore funds are! I can give you back your life!"

Arthur stared down at the woman who had systematically destroyed his family, faked a murder, manipulated his grief, and terrorized his six-year-old daughter. The desire for vengeance burned hot in his chest, whispering to him to simply walk away and let gravity finish the job.

From behind him, Lily emerged slowly from her hiding place behind the iron lens, her small hand clutching the crumpled photograph of Sarah. She walked up to the edge of the balcony, peering down at Elena with sad, wide eyes.

"Daddy... is she going to fall?" Lily whispered softly, tugging gently on the sleeve of Arthur’s bloodied shirt.

Arthur looked down at his daughter, realizing in that exact moment that letting darkness consume him would mean letting Elena win in the end. He couldn't become a monster just to defeat one.

Arthur dropped to his knees, ignoring the searing pain in his muscles, and reached his hand down over the precipice.

"Take my hand, Elena," Arthur commanded firmly, his voice steady and devoid of anger.

Elena looked up in utter disbelief, her eyes wide as she reached out with her trembling right hand, grasping Arthur’s wrist with all her remaining strength. Arthur braced his boots against a stable stone pillar and pulled upward with every ounce of his remaining energy.

With a desperate heave, Elena tumbled over the ledge, landing hard onto the dusty floor of the balcony. She lay there coughing and gasping for air, clutching her bruised arms while rain poured down on her through the shattered roof.

The federal agent who had shot Miller stepped forward, kicking Elena’s dropped pistol away and pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

"Elena Rostova, you are under arrest for international identity theft, corporate espionage, and murder," the agent declared, yanking her hands behind her back and clicking the cuffs securely into place.

Arthur stood up slowly, picking Lily up into his arms and holding her close against his chest as the federal agent hauled Elena to her feet.

"You're a fool, Arthur," Elena spat, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth as she glared at him with pure venom. "You think the federal charges against you vanish just because I'm in cuffs? Check your phone. The system has already locked you out permanently."

Arthur frowned, pulling his smartphone from his pocket. The screen flashed a bright red error message accompanied by a high-pitched alarm tone.

The notification read: “Federal Warrant Active. All assets seized under National Security Provisions. Target: Arthur Sterling.”

Before Arthur could process the new nightmare, the federal agent’s radio crackled to life with an urgent dispatch message from the mainland.
