Chapter 6 - The Imposter’s Blueprint

The heavy metal door of the interrogation room slammed shut with a deafening bang as the emergency generator hummed to life overhead, casting long, eerie shadows across the concrete walls. Detective Miller stood up abruptly, drawing his service weapon as the fluorescent lights flickered back on with a loud electronic buzz.

"Stay right here, Arthur. Do not open this door for anyone," Miller commanded in a harsh whisper, keeping his eyes fixed on the frosted glass panel of the interrogation room.

Arthur nodded mutely, pulling the dossier closer to his chest where Lily sat curled up on the metal bench beside him, fast asleep from sheer exhaustion. He opened the manila folder with trembling fingers, ignoring the dried blood staining the edges of the paperwork.

Inside lay a collection of mugshots, tax documents, and a detailed biographical profile that completely shattered every single memory Arthur had shared over the past two years.

The woman he knew as Claire was legally registered under the alias Elena Rostova, an international fugitive wanted for corporate espionage and identity theft across three continents. According to the federal documents, Elena possessed an unnatural talent for plastic surgery coordination and behavioral mimicry. She specialized in targeting wealthy, vulnerable widowers, systematically integrating herself into their lives by studying the deceased wives down to their smallest mannerisms, speech patterns, and handwriting styles.

Arthur stared down at a photograph of Elena taken five years ago before her extensive facial reconstruction surgeries. The face staring back at him was completely different—harsh features, thin lips, and a cold, predatory stare that bore no resemblance to the gentle woman he had fallen in love with.

"She didn't just steal my money... she studied Sarah’s entire life," Arthur muttered, a sickening wave of nausea washing over him as he realized how thoroughly he had been played.

The door to the interrogation room clicked softly, and the heavy metal panel swung open. Detective Miller stepped back inside, but his face was completely pale, and his hands were shaking as he holstered his weapon.

"Arthur, we have a major problem," Miller said, his voice laced with genuine panic. "The precinct network just suffered a catastrophic external cyberattack. Every single file on Elena Rostova has been wiped clean from our central database."

Arthur slammed the dossier down on the table. "Wiped clean? How is that even possible? This is a secure police server!"

"She has high-level inside help," Miller explained, pacing rapidly around the small room. "Whoever she is working with has deep government connections. They just issued an automated arrest warrant for you, Arthur."

Arthur stood up so fast his chair screeched loudly against the floor. "An arrest warrant for me? On what charges?"

"Attempted kidnapping, corporate fraud, and assault," Miller said grimly. "Your digital signature was used to transfer all remaining assets from your firm into offshore accounts linked directly to international terrorist financing. As far as the federal authorities are concerned, you are the criminal mastermind, and Elena is the victim."

Lily stirred on the bench, letting out a soft whimper as she rubbed her tired eyes. "Daddy? Are the bad people going to take us away?"

Arthur rushed to her side, scooping her into his arms and holding her tightly against his chest. "Never, sweetheart. Daddy will protect you." He looked up at Miller with fierce determination in his eyes. "We need to get out of here right now. Where can we go where she can't find us?"

Miller hesitated for a moment, then pulled a small, outdated key out of his pocket and tossed it across the table.

"Take my unmarked personal vehicle parked in the underground garage. Drive fifty miles north to the old abandoned lighthouse on Blackwood Point," Miller instructed in a hushed tone. "It's the only place completely off the digital grid."

Arthur caught the key, nodding gratefully. He carried Lily down the private service stairs toward the basement garage, pushing open the heavy fire exit door.
