Chapter 13 - The Ghost of Sarah

The words hung heavily in the subterranean air, echoing off the damp stone walls like a phantom bell tolling in the dark. Arthur stood paralyzed in front of the glowing satellite terminal, his mind refusing to process the impossible sentence he had just heard.
"Sarah is... alive?" Arthur stammered, his voice cracking violently as tears mixed with the saltwater dripping from his hair. "That's impossible. I identified her body at the morgue. I buried her casket!"
"A body provided by Detective Miller and covered by fabricated dental records," the distorted voice over the shortwave radio replied smoothly. "Elena needed you isolated, vulnerable, and completely broken so you would sign over your architectural firm without asking questions. Sarah discovered their money laundering scheme two years ago and was forced to go deep underground to protect both you and Lily."
Arthur gripped the edge of the wooden table so hard his knuckles turned completely white. A flood of fragmented memories rushed back into his mind—the strange circumstances surrounding the funeral, the closed-casket service, the federal officials who had urged him to sign the death certificates quickly to bypass an autopsy.
"If she's alive... where is she? Why hasn't she come back to us?" Arthur demanded, a mixture of profound relief and simmering anger boiling up inside his chest.
"She couldn't come back without bringing Elena's entire network down upon your heads. But now, Elena has overextended herself. She used her federal connections to target a minor, which triggered an internal Department of Defense security audit," the voice explained. "Vanguard is ready to strike. But we need you to provide the physical authentication key from Elena's personal safe at the chapel to lock them out permanently."
"The chapel... back in the city?" Arthur asked incredulously. "Elena's armed mercenaries and federal assets are swarming that place right now! It's a suicide mission!"
"It's the only way to expose the conspiracy and clear your name," the radio static crackled. "Check your pocket, Arthur."
Arthur frowned, reaching down into the wet pocket of his discarded jacket. His fingers brushed against a small, heavy metal drive he didn't remember putting there—a master decryption key stamped with the Department of Justice insignia.
Before Arthur could reply, a soft footstep echoed from the mouth of the tunnel behind him. He spun around instantly, raising a heavy iron pipe he had grabbed from the floor.
