Chapter 7 - The Blackwood Trap

The blinding glare of the high beams forced Arthur to throw his arm across his face, shielding Lily as she buried her small head against his shoulder in terror. The engine of the black SUV roared to life, echoing off the concrete pillars of the underground garage as the vehicle accelerated directly toward them at high speed.
Arthur scrambled backward, his boots slipping slightly on the slick pavement before he managed to duck behind a large concrete structural support pillar just as the SUV slammed on its brakes, skidding to a halt mere inches from where they had been standing.
The driver's side door swung open, and a tall man in a dark tactical suit stepped out, holding a suppressed firearm in his right hand.
"Hand over the girl and walk away, Arthur, and maybe you'll live to see tomorrow," the operative barked, scanning the shadows with cold, calculating eyes.
Arthur gripped Miller’s car key tightly in his pocket, his mind racing for an escape route. He knew he couldn't outrun a trained operative on foot while carrying a six-year-old child. He had to use the environment to his advantage.
Without hesitation, Arthur grabbed a heavy plastic recycling bin sitting beside the pillar and hurled it with all his might directly at the overhead sprinkler system control box.
Clang!
The heavy bin smashed into the fragile pipe fittings, instantly snapping the master water valve. Within seconds, millions of gallons of pressurized water rained down from the ceiling, plunging the underground garage into a chaotic downpour and creating thick sheets of artificial fog that completely obscured visibility.
"What the hell?" the operative shouted, cursing loudly as he lost sight of his targets in the heavy spray.
Arthur didn't waste a single second. He sprinted through the freezing water toward Detective Miller’s unmarked sedan parked near the corner of the garage. He unlocked the doors with the key fob, tossed Lily into the back seat, and dove into the driver's seat, slamming the door shut.
He punched the ignition button. The engine roared to life, and Arthur threw the gearshift into reverse, tires spinning wildly in the water before grabbing traction. He whipped the steering wheel around, slamming his foot down on the gas pedal and barreling straight toward the garage security gate.
Crash!
The vehicle smashed through the lightweight aluminum security barrier, sending twisted metal flying in all directions as they burst out into the pouring rain of the city streets. Arthur glanced in the rearview mirror; the black SUV was already backing out of the garage, hot on their tail with its headlights blazing through the storm.
Arthur pushed the car past ninety miles per hour, weaving recklessly through late-night traffic as rain sheeted down across the windshield faster than the wipers could clear it.
"Hold on tight, Lily! We are almost out of the city!" Arthur yelled over the roar of the engine and the howling wind.
"I'm scared, daddy! The bad men are following us!" Lily cried from the back seat, her voice cracking with terror.
"Look at the glove compartment, sweetheart. There's a flashlight and a red thermos inside. Just hold onto them!" Arthur instructed, keeping his eyes glued to the slick, winding asphalt ahead.
They drove for over an hour, leaving the glittering lights of the metropolitan skyline far behind as the urban sprawl gave way to dense, shadowy pine forests. The road grew narrower and bumpier, turning into a dirt trail flanked by towering cliffs on one side and a sheer drop into the churning, dark ocean on the other.
Finally, through the sheets of rain, the imposing silhouette of the Blackwood Point lighthouse loomed against the stormy horizon, its ancient stone walls standing like a lonely sentinel against the elements.
Arthur steered the sedan down the overgrown gravel driveway, killing the headlights as they approached the base of the tower. He cut the engine, plunging them into silence save for the crashing waves below.
