Chapter 2 - The Binding Ink

Arthur froze with Lily pressed safely against his shoulder, his boots halting mid-step on the polished wooden planks of the chapel floor. The sinister weight of Claire’s words hung heavily in the air, chilling him far more than the icy draft whistling through the stained-glass windows. He turned his head slightly, his jaw clenched so tightly that a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.
"What papers are you talking about, Claire?" Arthur demanded, his voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing growl.
Guests in the pews began whispering nervously among themselves, casting anxious glances toward the exits as the romantic celebration devolved into an absolute nightmare. Claire wiped a fake tear from her cheek, her delicate fingers smoothing the front of her expensive lace gown with terrifying composure.
"The prenuptial agreement, my love, and the corporate asset transfer we finalized over breakfast," Claire replied, her tone dripping with a sickly sweet condescension that made Arthur’s stomach churn. "You legally signed over complete control of your architectural firm to my holding company this very morning, right before we drove to the venue."
Arthur’s eyes went wide as the brutal reality crashed down upon his consciousness like a tidal wave. He remembered the stack of documents Claire had pushed across the kitchen island while he was distracted by tying his bowtie. She had claimed they were standard legal formalities required for filing joint taxes after the marriage.
"You tricked me," Arthur whispered, the blood draining completely from his face. "You manipulated me into signing away my entire life’s work."
"I secured our future, Arthur," Claire corrected sharply, stepping down from the altar platform with predatory grace. "And now, if you walk out of these doors with that ungrateful brat, you will leave flat broke, homeless, and facing millions in corporate debts."
Lily buried her face deeper into Arthur’s neck, her small body trembling with fresh terror as she clutched the crumpled family photograph even tighter. Arthur looked down at his daughter’s tear-stained face, seeing the ugly red mark where Claire had struck her earlier that morning. The fierce fire of paternal protection instantly melted away any fear of financial ruin.
"I don't care about the money, Claire," Arthur said, standing tall and staring directly into the cold, calculating eyes of the woman he had trusted. "Keep the firm. Keep the accounts. But you will never, ever lay a finger on my daughter again."
Arthur turned sharply on his heel and strode down the aisle, ignoring the stunned gasps of the wedding guests. He pushed open the heavy oak doors of the chapel, stepping out into the bright afternoon sunlight with Lily in his arms.
"Stop right there, Arthur!" Claire’s shrill voice echoed from the doorway behind them. "You think you have won, but you don't even know who I really am!"

Arthur didn't look back as he placed Lily into the passenger seat of his sedan. He slammed the door, walked around to the driver's side, and started the engine. As he pulled away from the curb, he glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Claire standing on the chapel steps, dialing a number on her phone with a truly demonic expression.
