Chapter 5 - The Stranger in the Trench Coat

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white. The chapel was dead silent save for the heavy breathing of the wedding guests pressed against the walls in sheer terror. Officer Miller kept his weapon trained on the stranger, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.

"Drop the briefcase and kick it toward me, slowly," Miller ordered, his voice ringing with authority. "Do it now, or I will open fire."

The stranger—a rugged-looking man with silver-streaked hair and a jagged scar across his left jawline—slowly lowered the briefcase to the wooden floor. He didn't look at the cop; his eyes remained fixed squarely on Julian.

"My name is Cole," the man said evenly, ignoring the police officer's commands. "And I'm the one who pulled Sarah out of that burning wreckage three years ago. She didn't die in that car crash, Julian. Marcus paid a crew to stage it because she discovered he was embezzling millions from your family's construction empire."

Clara stumbled forward, clutching the torn lace of her wedding dress. "He's telling the truth, Julian. Sarah and I... we were college roommates. When Marcus found out she was going to the authorities, he threatened to orphan Lily. Sarah begged me to take her place in the safehouse network. I assumed her identity to protect the child, but Marcus found out. He forced me to marry him today under threat of exposure."

Julian stared at Cole, then at Clara, and finally back toward the side exit where Marcus had vanished into the alleyway. The pieces of the agonizing puzzle were clicking together with terrifying precision, but the emotional weight of the betrayal felt impossible to bear.

"If Sarah is alive," Julian choked out, his voice barely a whisper, "where is she?"

Cole reached into his trench coat slowly, pulling out a heavy, encrypted satellite phone and laying it gently on the altar next to the ruined wedding cake. The screen flickered to life, displaying an incoming video call from an unknown, encrypted satellite relay.

"She's waiting," Cole said quietly. "And she's watching this exact livestream right now."
