Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

The air inside the municipal chapel tasted of white lilies and absolute betrayal. Julian stood frozen on the polished wooden floor, his black tuxedo suddenly feeling like a leaden weight crushing his chest. The American flag on the white wall hung limp, a silent witness to a ceremony destroyed in seconds. At his side, Clara’s pristine white lace wedding gown pooled around her knees like seafoam as she collapsed in wretched tears onto the stage.

Just feet away, six-year-old Lily sobbed uncontrollably, her blonde pigtails trembling with every heave of her chest. Julian dropped to his knees, ignoring the dirt smudging his pristine white shirt, and grabbed the small framed photograph she held out like a shield. The glass was slightly cracked. Inside was an image of a smiling woman with dark hair holding a baby—a woman Julian had loved, mourned, and buried three years ago. Or so he had been told.

"How could you lie to me?!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking with a raw fury that silenced the murmuring guests in blue dresses and dark suits.

Clara buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently. "Julian, please, let me explain! It was never meant to go this far!"

"Explain what?!" Julian snarled, holding the photograph so close to Clara’s face she had to lean back. "That my dead wife isn't dead? That you built an entire relationship with me based on a stolen identity?"

"Daddy, don't look at her," Lily cried, wrapping her small arms tightly around Julian’s neck. "She's bad. She took Mommy's pictures. She took Mommy's life."

The heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel slammed open, and a murmur ripped through the shocked crowd as two police officers entered, responding to a silent alarm triggered by the panic. Julian stared at the woman he had sworn to love until death do them part, realizing he never truly knew her at all.

Clara wiped a tear from her cheek, her eyes suddenly turning cold and desperate. "You think I'm the monster, Julian? Look closer at the back of that frame before you let them arrest me."
