Chapter 3 - The Brother's Shadow

Marcus stepped into the aisle, his designer leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the wooden floor. His dark suit was immaculate, completely unaffected by the chaos that had just unfolded. He offered the stunned guests a reassuring, practiced smile, as if walking into a normal wedding reception rather than a crime scene.
"Julian, thank God," Marcus said, his voice dripping with false empathy. "I heard shouting from the parking lot. What on earth is happening? Is Clara alright?"
Julian slowly stood up, clutching the yellowed note in one hand and the framed photograph in the other. He stared at his older brother, seeing him through an entirely new, terrifying lens. Every family dinner, every comforting hug Marcus had offered after Sarah’s tragic death, suddenly felt like a sick performance orchestrated by a master manipulator.
"Shut up, Marcus," Julian said, his voice chillingly quiet. "Don't say another word."
Marcus blinked, feigning utter confusion. "Julian, brother, you're shaking. Put the photo down. Let's handle this privately in the vestry. You don't want to make a scene in front of the police."
"You knew, didn't you?" Julian accused, taking a slow step forward. "Sarah's note. She said someone in the family was threatening her life. She said if anything happened to her, look to the bloodline."
Clara finally pushed herself up from the floor, leaning against the altar for support. Her face was pale, devoid of the bridal glow she had worn just ten minutes prior. "He didn't just know, Julian. Marcus orchestrated the entire thing. The crash, the fake funeral, the forged documents. He helped me assume a new identity so I could survive, but he threatened to kill Lily if I ever told you the truth."
Officer Miller stepped forward, pulling out his notepad. "Alright, everyone freeze. We have multiple felony allegations, identity fraud, and potential homicide on the table. Nobody leaves this room."

Marcus’s expression shifted instantly. The comforting brother facade vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. He reached slowly into his inner jacket pocket, his eyes locked dead on Julian.
