Chapter 10 - The Subsurface Maze

The air inside the maintenance tunnel was thick with the scent of damp concrete, ozone, and rust. The beam of Julian’s riot flashlight cut a sharp white tunnel through the swirling dust motes, illuminating the dripping pipes running along the curved ceiling. Every footstep echoed with a hollow, menacing ring against the hard floor.
"Julian, do you copy?" Officer Miller’s voice crackled through the small tactical radio clamped to his collar. "SWAT is thirty seconds away from the surface intake vent on 4th Street. Stay put until they arrive."
"Negative, Miller," Julian whispered back into the comms, keeping his voice low to avoid alerting anyone down the line. "The countdown timer on Marcus's video was moving too fast. If I wait for SWAT, Sarah's medical life support will fail."
"Julian, listen to me, that tunnel is a labyrinth of old utility shafts and high-voltage junctions. Marcus knows those blueprints better than anyone. He's waiting for you."
"Good. So am I."
Julian rounded a sharp ninety-degree corner, his boots splashing through a shallow puddle of stagnant water. Ahead of him, the tunnel split into three separate branching pathways, each marked with faded, peeling stencil signs: SECTOR A - WATER, SECTOR B - POWER, SECTOR C - TRANSIT.
Which way had Marcus gone? Julian paused, listening intently. Faintly, beneath the distant hum of industrial generators, he heard the rhythmic, metallic clink of a key turning in a heavy lock down the Sector B corridor.
He raised the flashlight and sprinted down Sector B, the walls closing in tighter as the tunnel descended deeper beneath the city streets. The temperature dropped sharply, and the air began to taste faintly of burnt copper.

Suddenly, the overhead emergency lights flickered violently and died, plunging the entire tunnel into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
