Chapter 4 - The Hidden Weapon

"Don't do it, Marcus!" Officer Miller commanded, unsnapping his holster and leveling his service weapon directly at the older brother. "Hands where I can see them! Now!"
Marcus slowly withdrew his hand from his jacket, holding up his palms in mock surrender. But a chilling, arrogant smirk played at the corners of his mouth. He didn't look like a cornered criminal; he looked like a man who held all the winning cards in a rigged game.
"You're making a massive mistake, Officer," Marcus said smoothly, his voice echoing in the silent chapel. "My brother is grieving a wife he thinks has been dead for three years. He's unstable. Look at him—he's holding a broken picture frame and listening to a pathological liar who stole an innocent woman's identity."
"She didn't steal anything!" Lily yelled fiercely, stepping out from behind Julian’s legs. She pointed a trembling finger at her uncle. "You're a bad man! You locked Mommy in the basement of the old lake house! I saw you! I saw you do it before the bad men took us away!"
The color drained entirely from Marcus’s face. The slick confidence evaporated, replaced by a sudden, feral panic. He lunged sideways, diving behind a row of white folding chairs to use the seated guests as human shields.
"Grab him!" Julian roared, abandoning all restraint as he vaulted over the altar railing, sprinting down the side aisle to cut off Marcus’s escape route toward the side exit.
Officer Miller rushed forward, shouting orders into his shoulder radio for backup, but the heavy oak side door burst open with a loud crash. A stranger in a trench coat stepped into the chapel, blocking Julian’s path and holding up a heavy steel briefcase between them.

"Back off, Julian," the stranger growled, flicking open the briefcase to reveal stacks of hundred-dollar bills and a passport bearing Sarah’s real face, but a completely different name. "Your brother doesn't have the whole story either. If you want to know what really happened to your wife, you need to listen to the person who helped her escape."
