Chapter 8

By the end of the week, Julian’s face had become the poster boy for internet debates, morning talk shows, and legal podcasts. Social media influencers dissected every frame of the leaked cathedral video—the heavy tears of the little girl, Julian’s stoic posture, the bride’s dramatic fall from grace. Public opinion was sharply divided. Half the internet praised Julian for his uncompromising morality; the other half accused him of engineering a cruel, premeditated stunt to break a woman’s heart on national television.
Julian sat in his dimly lit living room, the television muted, watching the silent crawl of news tickers at the bottom of the screen. His phone buzzed incessantly on the coffee table—texts from distant relatives, interview requests from major networks, and threatening messages from anonymous accounts defending Elena.
He didn’t care about the noise. What weighed on him was the quiet realization of how easily he had been deceived. For two years, he had believed Elena was his soulmate. They had shared mundane Tuesday nights, planned vacations, and discussed a future family. Yet, underneath the charming smile and polished exterior lay a woman capable of fleeing a dying mother in the rain and burying the secret for half a decade.
A sharp knock at the door broke his solitude. Julian didn’t bother checking the peephole; he simply turned the deadbolt and pulled it open.
Standing in the hallway was not a reporter, but Elena’s defense attorney, a sharp-suited man with slicked-back gray hair and an expression of calculated confidence. Behind him stood two burly men who looked like private investigators.
"Mr. Hayes," the lawyer said smoothly, stepping uninvited into the entryway. "I’m Richard Vance—no relation to Elena, though I assure you her family has spared no expense in securing my services."
"You’re trespassing," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Step out of my apartment right now, or I’ll call the police myself."
Richard smiled thinly, holding up his hands in a placating gesture. "Relax, Mr. Hayes. I’m not here to cause trouble. I’m here to offer you a proposition. My client is currently facing serious felony charges, but as you well know, the prosecution’s case relies heavily on circumstantial evidence from an anonymous source and a disgruntled fiancé who staged a very public humiliation."

Julian stared at the lawyer in disbelief. "Staged? You think I planned this?"
"I think optics are everything in a court of law," Richard replied, stepping closer. "If you sign an affidavit stating that you panicked under the pressure of the wedding and exaggerated the contents of that letter, the defamation charges against you go away, and Elena’s team will quietly settle the matter out of court. No jail time, no further media circus for you."
