THE BRIDE WHO CRIED BLOOD / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2

The scream tore through the vaulted ceiling of St. Jude’s Cathedral, echoing off the stained-glass windows and bouncing against the stone walls. It was not the cry of a bride denied, but the raw sound of a life unraveling in real time. Elena’s hands flew to her face, her manicured fingers clutching at the delicate lace of her veil as she staggered backward down the aisle. Her mother rushed forward from the front row, catching her before she collapsed onto the polished wooden floor.

Julian remained frozen by the altar, still gripping the crumpled white letter. Little Lily buried her face in Julian’s white tuxedo trousers, her small frame shaking with renewed sobbing. The cathedral erupted into chaos. Whispers turned to shouts as family members stood up from their pews, craning their necks to understand what had just transpired. Julian’s best friend, Marcus, hurried up the steps of the altar, his face flushed with anger and confusion.

"Julian, what the hell are you doing?" Marcus hissed, grabbing his friend by the elbow. "Are you out of your mind? Look at her! Look at what you’ve just done to Elena!"

"Read it," Julian whispered, his voice dead as he extended the crumpled paper toward Marcus. "Just read what she brought me."

Marcus hesitated, then snatched the letter from Julian’s grip. He unfolded the heavy linen sheet, his eyes scanning the handwritten lines. As the seconds ticked by, the color completely drained from Marcus’s face. His jaw went slack, and the anger in his eyes dissolved into sheer horror. He lowered the letter slowly, staring at Julian with a mixture of disbelief and profound pity.

"Where... where did this come from?" Marcus asked, his voice barely audible over the weeping of the guests and Elena’s muffled screams in the distance.

"Lily brought it to me five minutes before the ceremony," Julian replied, his gaze shifting to the little girl clinging to his side. "It was slipped under the door of the bride’s dressing room, addressed to me. But it wasn’t meant for my eyes until tonight. Lily found it, realized what it meant, and ran straight to me."

Elena was struggling against her mother’s embrace now, her dark eyes blazing with furious tears as she pointed a shaking finger directly at Julian. "How could you do this?" she shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. "You humiliated me in front of everyone! Get out here and explain yourself, Julian! Tell them why you’re doing this!"

Julian took a deep, shaky breath, straightened his black bow tie, and began to walk down the altar steps toward the distraught bride.
