Chapter 5

The cathedral doors swung open again, letting in a harsh shaft of daylight and the flashing red and blue lights of two police cruisers parked outside on the cobblestone plaza. The low murmur of the congregation swelled into panic as two uniformed officers stepped into the nave, their heavy boots clicking against the marble floor with deliberate, ominous rhythm.
Elena spun around, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she watched the officers approach. Her mother rushed to her side, shielding her from the approaching law enforcement. "What is the meaning of this?" her mother demanded, stepping into the path of the lead officer, a tall, stern-faced man with silver hair.
"We are looking for Elena Vance," the officer said, his voice calm and authoritative. He held up a plastic evidence bag containing a matching copy of the letter Julian had received. "We received an anonymous tip containing substantial forensic evidence regarding a cold case from Savannah, Georgia. We have a warrant to question Ms. Vance."
Julian stood silently by the altar, watching the scene unfold with a heavy, numb heart. Lily reached up and grabbed his hand, her small fingers wrapping tightly around his index finger. He looked down at her, offering a sad, reassuring smile before kneeling to her eye level.
"You’re safe now, Lily," Julian murmured, brushing a stray blonde curl from her tear-streaked cheek. "The truth is out. No one can hurt you anymore."
Marcus walked over, resting a hand on Julian’s shoulder. "What are you going to do now, man? This is a massive mess. Your life is turned upside down."
"My life is just starting over," Julian replied, standing up to face the unfolding drama in the center aisle. "I couldn’t have married her, Marcus. Not after knowing what I know. Every time I looked at her smile, I would have seen the shadow of what she hid from me."
In the aisle, Elena was sobbing openly now, her heavy makeup running down her cheeks, staining the pristine white lace of her bodice. She refused the handcuffs, but allowed the officers to escort her toward the heavy oak doors. As she passed Julian, she stopped for a fraction of a second, her dark eyes locking onto his with a look of pure, unadulterated betrayal.

"You loved me," she whispered, her voice trembling violently. "How could you throw it all away so easily?"
"I loved the person I thought you were," Julian answered, his voice steady and devoid of malice. "That person never existed, Elena."
