THE BRIDE WHO CRIED BLOOD / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11

As the weeks bled into one another, the legal walls around Elena began to close in with terrifying speed. The prosecution’s case transformed from a speculative media sensation into an airtight fortress of forensic and documentary evidence. Julian’s testimony during the preliminary hearings proved pivotal, providing the prosecution with a clear narrative of how the truth had finally surfaced.

Julian spent his evenings working late at his architectural firm, losing himself in blueprints and structural designs as a way to quiet the restless anxiety in his chest. His colleagues, initially hesitant around him due to the media storm, had slowly returned to treating him with respect as the public narrative shifted from a petty breakup to a genuine crusade for justice.

One rainy Tuesday evening, as Julian packed his leather briefcase to leave the office, his phone buzzed on the desk. It was an unknown number with a Savannah area code. He hesitated before swiping to answer.

"Hello?" Julian said cautiously.

"Julian? It’s Arthur." The older man’s voice sounded tired, but there was an unmistakable undertone of relief. "I thought you should know. Elena’s legal team just tried to negotiate a plea deal with the district attorney."

Julian stopped packing. "A plea deal? What are the terms?"

"Involuntary manslaughter, failure to render aid, and obstruction of justice," Arthur replied softly. "She’s looking at five to seven years in federal custody. No probation, no early release clauses. The judge already signaled he’s going to accept the terms during tomorrow morning’s arraignment."

Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension leaving his shoulders for the first time in months. "It’s over, then."

"Well, the legal battle is coming to an end," Arthur said. "But healing takes a lot longer. Lily asked about you today, Julian. She wants to know if you'll come visit us in Savannah once the trial is completely wrapped up. She misses her friend in the white tuxedo."

Julian stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office, watching the rain streak down the glass against the glittering backdrop of the city skyline. "Tell her I’ll be there, Arthur. I wouldn't miss it for the world."

"Take care of yourself, Julian," Arthur said before hanging up.

Julian clicked his phone off and slid it into his pocket. He looked around the empty office, realizing that while his old life had been utterly destroyed, the ashes had left room for something real, honest, and unburdened by secrets.
