Chapter 13

Two weeks after the sentencing, Julian packed a single duffel bag into the trunk of his car and set off on the long drive south toward Savannah, Georgia. The miles stretched out before him under a vast, open sky, the monotonous hum of the highway serving as a meditative backdrop for his thoughts. He needed this trip—not just to close the chapter on the past, but to find some semblance of peace where the storm had first begun.

The air grew warmer and heavier as he crossed the state line into Georgia, the Spanish moss hanging heavy from the ancient oak trees that lined the historic streets of Savannah. It was a city of ghosts and old secrets, beautiful on the surface yet hiding deep, complicated histories beneath its charming facade.

He parked his car near a quiet square downtown and walked two blocks to a small, brightly painted bakery with a hand-lettered sign in the window. Arthur had told him to meet him here. The bell above the door chimed softly as Julian stepped inside, the warm scent of cinnamon and fresh coffee wrapping around him like an old blanket.

Arthur was sitting at a corner table by the window, reading the morning paper. Sitting across from him, coloring in a thick book with bright markers, was little Lily. Her blonde curls bounced as she leaned over the page, completely absorbed in her artwork.

"Julian!" Arthur looked up first, a warm smile breaking across his weathered face as he stood to greet him.

Lily dropped her red crayon instantly, jumped off her chair, and ran across the wooden floor. Before Julian could even bend down, her small arms wrapped tightly around his waist, burying her face in his jacket. Julian dropped to one knee, wrapping his arms around her and holding her close, feeling a lump rise in his throat.

"You came back," Lily whispered, looking up at him with her bright blue eyes, free of the heavy tears that had stained her face on that fateful wedding day.

"I promised I would, didn't I?" Julian smiled softly, brushing a curl from her forehead. "A man in a white tuxedo always keeps his promises, Lily."
