Chapter 14

The afternoon passed in a blur of simple, grounding moments. Julian, Arthur, and Lily spent hours walking through Savannah’s historic squares, eating warm pastries, and feeding breadcrumbs to the ducks in Forsyth Park. There were no cameras here, no legal briefs, and no echoing cathedral pillars—just the quiet rhythm of ordinary life resuming after a devastating storm.

Sitting on a green park bench as Lily chased a butterfly across the grass, Arthur turned to Julian with a cup of black coffee in his hand.

"You look different, Julian," Arthur observed quietly, watching the little girl laugh in the distance. "Lighter. Like you finally put down a heavy backpack you didn't even realize you were carrying."

"I think I was carrying someone else’s life," Julian admitted, staring out across the sun-drenched lawn. "For two years, I thought I was building a future with Elena. But looking back, I realize I was just playing a role in a script she wrote to keep her past buried. Letting go of her wasn't losing my future; it was finally finding out who I actually am."

"Truth is a heavy thing to carry when it’s hidden," Arthur said gently. "But once it’s out in the open, it sets you free. You saved Lily from a lifetime of wondering what happened to justice. You gave her back her peace of mind."

"She gave me back mine," Julian replied, looking over at the little girl as she waved enthusiastically from across the lawn.

"What are your plans now?" Arthur asked. "Back to Chicago? Back to the architectural firm?"

"I’m stepping away from the firm for a while," Julian said, a calm smile spreading across his face. "I sold my share of the partnership last week. I’m thinking of opening a small practice down here. Start fresh. Build things that last—structures built on honest foundations, where nothing is hidden behind the walls."

Arthur nodded approvingly, raising his coffee cup in a silent toast. "Savannah has a way of welcoming people who are ready to build something real."
