Chapter 8 - The Price of a Dynasty

The red numbers on the satellite transmitter ticked downward in the dim silence of the ballroom: 00:32… 00:31… 00:30…

Arthur’s finger hovered over the pistol’s trigger, the tension in his forearm turning his muscles to iron. Every instinct told him to pull the trigger, to end the bloodline of betrayal right here on the Persian rug. But the blinking red digits reminded him of the catastrophic collateral damage. If Marcus’s dead-man’s switch activated, every ally, every corrupt politician, and every legitimate business partner the Vance family had cultivated over four decades would be publicly exposed. The fallout would annihilate not just their wealth, but their lives.

“You’re bluffing,” Arthur said, though his voice lacked conviction. “You’d destroy your own empire just to spite us?”

“Empire?” Marcus laughed, a short, barking sound devoid of any humor. “Arthur, you old fool, I never cared about the empire. I cared about the leverage. Empires crumble; leverage is eternal.”

Clara didn't look at the timer. Her eyes were fixed on Marcus’s left hand—specifically, the satellite transmitter. She calculated the distance between them: roughly six feet. Too far for a lunge, but well within range of a high-voltage projectile.

00:15… 00:14…

“Dad, do it,” Clara said suddenly, her voice cutting through the panic in the room like a razor blade.

Marcus’s head snapped toward her, his arrogant smile faltering for a fraction of a second. “What did you say?”

“I said, do it, Dad,” Clara repeated, stepping out into the open, completely ignoring the gun and the countdown. “Let the dead-man’s switch upload. Let the world see every bribe, every dirty offshore account, every crime our family and their friends committed. Because the moment that file goes public, the federal government seizes every asset you and your cartel partners own. You lose everything, Marcus.”

Marcus’s eyes widened slightly, the first true sign of genuine panic breaking through his icy facade. He hadn't expected the bruised, battered bride to call his bluff. He slammed his thumb onto the transmitter to halt the countdown at 00:03, the red numbers freezing in place.

“You’re insane,” Marcus whispered, the polished veneer cracking completely.

“No,” Clara replied, closing the distance between them until she was standing mere inches away from her uncle. “I’m just finally awake.”

Before Marcus could react, Clara reached into her jacket, pulled out her tactical taser, and jammed the dual-pronged barrel directly into his chest.

BZZZZT!

The high-voltage discharge lit up the room in a blinding blue flash. Marcus let out a choked, inhuman gasp as fifty thousand volts coursed through his body, his eyes rolling back as his knees buckled. He crashed hard onto the hardwood floor, the satellite transmitter flying from his limp hand and sliding across the polished wood.

Arthur moved instantly, kicking the transmitter away and dropping to his knees to secure Marcus in heavy-duty tactical zip-ties.

“Checkmate,” Clara breathed, her hand steady as she lowered the taser.

But as the smoke cleared and Marcus lay unconscious on the floor, the security console by the desk suddenly beeped. A new file had just downloaded automatically from an external server—a video file labeled simply: The Real Bride.
