Chapter 1 - The Veil of Glass

The heavy oak doors clicked shut, locking the private bridal suite against the murmur of the grand ballroom outside. Clara pressed her trembling fingertips against her right cheek, where the flesh throbbed beneath a thick layer of professional concealer. The makeup could not hide the angry purple swelling around her eye, nor could it mask the sharp, stinging split across her eyebrow. She looked at her reflection in the gilded mirror, her white tulle veil slightly askew, a tragic crown for a shattered morning. A soft, breathless sigh escaped her lips, sounding like dry leaves scraping across pavement.

“Ah,” she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of her suppressed terror.

The brass door handle turned with a deliberate, metallic click. Arthur Vance strode into the room, his black tuxedo immaculate, his grey hair neatly brushed back from a face carved from granite. His eyes swept the room, instantly locking onto Clara’s bruised face. The older man’s jaw tightened, the muscles ticking in his cheek as a cold, dangerous fury ignited in his chest.

“Who did this to you?” Arthur demanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that brooked no argument.

Before Clara could form a response, Julian stepped through the doorway behind Arthur. The groom wore a cream-white tuxedo jacket and a matching white bowtie, looking every bit the charming prince of high society. He raised a crystal champagne flute to his lips, taking a slow, leisurely sip before offering a thin, condescending smile.

“Just teaching her a lesson in our family,” Julian replied smoothly, as if discussing the weather.

Arthur’s gaze shifted from his daughter to his newly minted son-in-law. The older man stared coldly, his eyes filled with barely controlled rage that seemed to lower the temperature in the room by ten degrees. Without breaking eye contact, Arthur slowly reached inside his black jacket, his fingers wrapping around his smartphone. He turned his back on Julian with deliberate contempt.

“This wedding is over,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. “You don't want to make a scene.”

Without waiting for a reply, Arthur turned and strode out of the bridal suite, the heavy doors swinging open to reveal the candlelit wedding aisle. Hundreds of wealthy guests sat in hushed anticipation, waiting for the ceremony to resume. Arthur walked toward the center of the aisle, holding up his smartphone with the screen glowing brightly. Julian stared at his retreating back, his relaxed posture instantly vanishing as sudden terror gripped his chest.
