Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Vault

The audio recording echoed off the soaring cathedral ceilings, bouncing against the ornate stained-glass windows and freezing the wedding guests in their seats. Julian’s recorded voice was unmistakable, barking vicious threats of financial ruin and physical violence. The murmurs of shock rippled through the pews like a sudden gale through dry grass. Arthur stood rigidly at the center of the aisle, his thumb hovering over the pause button, letting the damning evidence hang in the air for every powerful family member to hear.

Julian burst out of the bridal suite, his cream tuxedo jacket flying open as he sprinted down the aisle toward Arthur. Panic had completely stripped away his polished veneer, leaving behind the frantic, cornered animal beneath.

“Stop it! Turn that damn thing off right now, Arthur!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as he lunged forward, trying to swat the phone from his father-in-law's hand.

Arthur didn't flinch. He sidestepped Julian with the lethal grace of a man who had survived decades of corporate warfare. He slipped the phone back into his breast pocket and met Julian’s frantic gaze with eyes as cold as winter stone. The wedding guests began to stand up, their whispers turning into an angry roar of condemnation. Among them sat investors, politicians, and patriarchs who had trusted Julian with their capital and their daughters.

“You’ve made a terrible mistake,” Julian hissed, grabbing Arthur’s lapel in a desperate bid for intimidation. “My family will destroy you. Every asset you own, every contract you hold—we will crush it by sundown.”

Arthur slowly looked down at Julian’s hand gripping his tuxedo, then raised his eyes back to the younger man’s face. A humorless, terrifying smile touched the corners of Arthur’s mouth.

“Your family built their empire on glass foundations, Julian,” Arthur said softly, his voice cutting through the rising din of the crowd. “And I’ve just thrown the first stone.”

Clara finally emerged from the bridal suite, her white veil trailing behind her like a shroud. She walked slowly down the aisle, her bruised face held high, the tear tracks on her cheeks dried into salt paths of defiance. The entire congregation parted for her, their expressions shifting from festive joy to deep, collective horror as they truly took in the extent of her injuries.

Julian spun around, realizing he was entirely surrounded by powerful enemies he had deeply underestimated. But as he reached into his own pocket to pull out his emergency backup burner phone, a red laser dot suddenly danced across his chest, stopping him dead in his tracks.
