Chapter 3 - The Red Dot

The tiny crimson circle burned brightly against the pristine fabric of Julian’s cream tuxedo jacket, resting squarely over his frantically beating heart. Julian froze, his hand halfway out of his pocket, his breath catching in his throat. He slowly raised his chin, his eyes darting toward the towering arched windows that overlooked the courtyard outside the grand cathedral.

Through the thick, reinforced glass, half a dozen shadowed figures stood on the stone balustrade, their high-powered sniper rifles trained precisely on the altar.

“What is the meaning of this?” shouted Senator Sterling, a prominent family friend in the front row, pointing a shaking finger at the windows before realizing the danger and ducking behind a heavy mahogany pew.

Arthur didn't look at the windows. He had anticipated this move. With absolute calm, the older man reached into his coat once more, withdrew a small, sleek black metal device, and pressed a single button. Instantly, a heavy-duty electronic jamming signal pulsed through the chapel, silencing every unauthorized radio frequency and blinding the sniper scopes with a blinding wash of digital static.

Julian stumbled backward, tripping over the heavy velvet altar rug and sprawling awkwardly onto his back. The absolute panic in his eyes was palpable. He looked from Arthur to the jammed windows, realizing his private security detail had just been neutralized without firing a single shot.

“You think I walked into your trap unprepared, Julian?” Arthur stepped closer, standing directly over the fallen groom. “You’ve been bleeding my daughter for months, isolating her, thinking our family's legacy made us weak. You forgot one fundamental rule of the Vance dynasty: we protect our own by any means necessary.”

Clara stopped a few feet away, looking down at the man who had terrorized her soul for the past year. The trembling in her hands had completely stopped. She reached up, unpinned the heavy white veil from her dark brown hair, and let it flutter to the floor like a fallen wing. The bruise over her eye seemed less like a mark of shame now and more like a badge of the war she was finally winning.

“Call them off, Arthur,” Julian choked out, his arrogance completely shattered. “If I don't check in by noon, the offshore accounts release everything. Every shell company, every bribe, every dirty secret involving half the people sitting in these pews.”

The whispered threats hung heavy in the chapel. Several prominent guests blanched, exchanging terrified glances. Arthur narrowed his eyes, sensing the shifting tide of fear in the room. But before he could answer, the heavy sanctuary doors blew inward with a deafening crash.
