Chapter 13 - The Island of Lost Assets

The heavy twin-rotor helicopter cut through the howling gale-force winds of the North Atlantic, its blades beating a furious rhythm against the black sky. Below them, jagged cliffs jutted out of the churning, ink-black ocean like broken teeth, surrounding a jagged private island dominated by a single concrete airstrip and a reinforced bunker complex.

Inside the cabin, the red instrument lights cast an eerie glow over Arthur and Clara as they strapped themselves into tactical jump harnesses. Arthur handed Clara a suppressed automatic carbine, checking the safety before passing it over. She took it with steady hands, her muscle memory kicking in from the covert survival training her father had insisted she learn as a teenager—training she had almost forgotten until tonight.

“The island’s anti-air defenses will be active,” Arthur shouted over the deafening roar of the jet turbine engines. “We have to drop in via the utility maintenance tunnel near the cliffs, not the pad.”

“Understood,” Clara replied, locking the carbine’s stock against her shoulder. “How many guards?”

“At least two dozen heavy contractors,” Arthur said grimly. “Armed, trained, and expecting us.”

The helicopter banked sharply, dropping low below the radar horizon to avoid detection by the island's coastal defense sensors. It hovered just thirty feet above the sheer rock face of the cliffside utility entrance. Without hesitation, Arthur dropped through the open side hatch, fast-roping down into the howling wind and rain. Clara followed a second later, sliding down the heavy nylon rope with practiced speed, her boots hitting the slick concrete platform of the cliff entrance with a dull thud.

The heavy iron door to the maintenance tunnel was padlocked, but Arthur didn't hesitate. He pulled a small tactical breaching charge from his belt, slapped it against the lock, and stepped back.

BOOM.

The muffled explosion blew the lock into a shower of sparks, and the heavy door swung inward, revealing a long, dimly lit concrete corridor that smelled of rust, ozone, and salt water. They moved inside with military precision, clearing corners shoulder to shoulder, the older father and his bruised, defiant daughter acting as a single, lethal unit.

As they rounded the final bend leading into the main underground bunker complex, the sound of muffled voices echoed off the tile walls. Clara crept forward, peering around the reinforced steel doorframe.

Inside the central control room stood Viktor and two heavily armed guards. Tied to a metal chair in the center of the room was Elena, her eyes open now, looking pale and disoriented, with the IV drip still taped to her arm. Standing beside her, casually sipping a glass of champagne, was a man Clara had never seen before—a man wearing an expensive tailored suit that looked entirely out of place in a mercenary bunker.

“The flight is prepped, gentlemen,” the man in the suit said smoothly. “Once the buyer inspects the merchandise, the transfer goes live, and the Vance dynasty is officially erased from the history books.”

Clara gripped her carbine tighter, her finger resting lightly on the trigger, as Arthur raised his weapon beside her, waiting for her signal.
