Chapter 8: The Raid

The basement corridor of Oakridge High was cloaked in perpetual shadow, illuminated only by the erratic flicker of a single fluorescent tube overhead that buzzed like an angry hornet. The air smelled of damp concrete, rust, and old cardboard. Leo balanced precariously on his crutches, his bad leg throbbing with a dull ache as he navigated the slick floor tiles behind Maya, who clutched a heavy-duty industrial flashlight in her right hand.
"Are you sure the maintenance supervisor didn't throw them into the incinerator?" Leo asked, his voice echoing softly against the concrete walls.
"I bribed the night janitor fifty bucks to hide our Pelican case behind the boiler room water heater," Maya whispered back, pausing to check the heavy iron door marked Authorized Personnel Only. "If it's still there, we have the raw source code on magnetic tape that predates any Sterling funding by at least six months."
Maya pushed the heavy door open with a metallic groan. Inside, the boiler room radiated a stifling, humid heat, the giant iron cylinders hissing softly as they pumped steam through the aging school building. Maya swept the beam of her flashlight across the concrete floor, dodging copper pipes and tangled bundles of fiber-optic cable, until the light finally caught the dull grey sheen of a hard-plastic equipment case tucked away in the deepest corner behind a rusted drainage valve.
"There! It's untouched," Maya breathed a sigh of relief, hurrying over to the case and flicking open the heavy steel latches.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the boiler room slammed shut behind them with a deafening bang that rattled the steam pipes overhead. The fluorescent light in the hallway clicked off, plunging the space into absolute darkness except for the narrow beam of Maya's flashlight.
"Well, well, look what the rats dragged in," a low, mocking voice echoed from the shadows near the entrance.
Chad stepped out from behind a towering stack of spare ventilation filters. His varsity jacket was gone, replaced by a dark hoodie pulled low over his forehead, casting his eyes in shadow. He wasn't smiling anymore; his face was hard, pale, and twisted with a desperate, frantic energy.
"You think you won everything, don't you, Vance?" Chad sneered, taking a slow step forward, blocking the only exit from the room. "My dad's lawyers are tearing your life apart piece by piece, and now you come sneaking down here like common thieves."
May you like
"Step aside, Chad," Leo said, his voice remarkably steady as he shifted his weight firmly onto his crutches, positioning himself between Chad and Maya. "The police are already reviewing the wire fraud charges against your father. You helping him destroy evidence is only going to add felony obstruction to your rap sheet."
"Shut up!" Chad screamed suddenly, lunging forward with a speed that caught them both completely off guard. He slammed his shoulder hard into Leo's chest, sending the boy crashing backward against a hissing steam pipe.
