Chapter 13: The Lockdown

The red digital display on the master control panel flashed violently as Marcus slammed his palm against the master override switch, locking every exterior fire exit and security door in the entire Oakridge High complex with a heavy, mechanical thud.
"Marcus, are you insane?!" Maya screamed, rushing toward the panel to stop him, but Marcus shoved her back hard against the metal equipment rack.
"If I'm going down for federal wire fraud, nobody walks out of this building until the state investigators look at the real files I left on the library server," Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with hysteria as he tore the master key out from the lock box and threw it directly into the orchestra pit below.
On the ground floor, hundreds of students who had rushed toward the courtyard doors suddenly found themselves blocked by reinforced steel security shutters. A rising tide of panic rippled through the hallways as the crowd realized they were trapped inside the building while the emergency alarm continued its relentless, piercing wail.
Principal Miller raced down the auditorium center aisle, shouting instructions into his handheld radio, but the radio emitted only static as the thick concrete walls blocked the signal.
On stage, Leo didn't hesitate. He swung his right crutch forward, hooking the aluminum frame sharply behind Marcus's knee just as the treasurer lunged to escape down the stairs. Marcus let out a sharp cry of surprise as his leg buckled beneath him, sending him crashing hard onto the carpeted stage floor. Maya was on him in an instant, pinning his arms behind his back with the practiced efficiency of a varsity wrestler while pressing her foot firmly against his wrist to keep him away from the emergency keypad.
"Get off me! You can't lock this building down!" Marcus thrashed beneath her, his voice muffled against the carpet.
Leo leaned down, his knuckles gripping his crutches as he reached for the auxiliary intercom microphone mounted on the side of the console. He pressed the master talk button, cutting through the piercing shriek of the fire alarm with a voice that echoed loud, clear, and steady throughout every hallway in the school.

"Attention Oakridge High. This is Leo Vance. The security lockdown is being manually overridden from the stage console right now. Walk calmly toward the gymnasium emergency bay doors. Repeat, the exits are opening."
With a deep, resonant click, the heavy steel security shutters across the campus buzzed and retracted into their wall slots, flooding the hallways with cool afternoon air as students poured safely out onto the sunlit athletic fields.
