Chapter 1: The Fall

The fluorescent lights of Oakridge High gymnasium hummed with a sterile, cold energy that matched the mid-November chill biting against the high frosted windows. Bleachers of faded yellow pine stretched upward, smelling of old wood, floor wax, and the accumulated sweat of a thousand afternoon basketball practices. Leo stood upright on the third tier, his knuckles white as he gripped the rubber handgrips of his metal crutches. His breath hitched in his chest, a tight, shallow movement caused by a mixture of lingering physical exhaustion and the sharp, sudden twist of adrenaline. Below him, the gym floor echoed with the murmur of three hundred students packed tightly together for the annual academic excellence assembly.
Chad stood directly on the step above, his shoulders encased in the heavy wool and leather of his red and white varsity letterman jacket. His blonde hair fell neatly across his forehead, framing a face twisted into a smirk of absolute, casual cruelty. Chad reached out with one hand, his fingers pressing heavily against Leo’s left shoulder blade.
"Think you’re getting that award, cripple?" Chad sneered, his voice loud enough to slice through the ambient gym noise like broken glass.
"Step back, Chad," Leo said, his voice trembling slightly with a mixture of fear and quiet dignity. "Just leave it alone."
"You don't belong on that stage, and you sure as hell don't deserve the science fellowship," Chad barked back, his eyes narrowing in contempt. "My dad funded half the gymnasium renovation. That envelope has my name on it, stamped and sealed by the committee chair."
"The committee graded blind, Chad," Leo shot back, his jaw clenching as he tried to brace his weight against the cold metal crutches. "Your project didn't even compile correctly during the regional showcase."
"Shut your mouth, loser," Chad snapped.

With a sharp, violent shove, Chad drove his palm hard into Leo's back. The force threw Leo completely off balance. His crutches skittered wildly across the wooden slats with a metallic clatter, leaving him with nothing to grab. Leo pitched forward, tumbling awkwardly down the remaining two tiers of the bleachers. He slammed hard against the lower wooden guardrail before crashing onto the polished gym floor with a sickening, muffled thud that cut through the surrounding chatter.
A collective gasp rippled through the student body, instantly replaced by the glowing blue light of a dozen smartphones hoisted into the air to record the spectacle. Leo groaned softly, pressing his forehead against the cold wood of the gym floor as a sharp pain flared up through his right knee. Slowly, fighting through the humiliating sting of tears, Leo reached a trembling hand upward toward the towering bleachers where Chad stood looking down. Chad smirked, casually pulling a thick white envelope bearing the school’s golden seal from his jacket pocket. He slid his thumb under the flap and pulled out the crisp evaluation papers inside, his eyes scanning the first few lines of the text. He didn't look at Leo on the floor; instead, his gaze fixed on the paper with absolute confidence. Up on the elevated stage, Sarah adjusted the microphone, tapping it twice before clearing her throat to read the official winner's name. Chad looked down at his letter, his smirk instantly freezing into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror.
