Chapter 12: The False Alarm

The piercing wail of the auditorium fire alarm reverberated through the vaulted ceiling, instantly shattering the quiet reverence of the assembly. Red emergency strobe lights flashed frantically along the walls, casting long, erratic shadows across the sea of startled faces. Students began shouting, pushing themselves up from their folding chairs and surging toward the side exit doors in a chaotic wave of panic.

"Stay calm! Do not run! Follow your teachers toward the courtyard exits!" Principal Miller's voice boomed through the backup PA system, though it was nearly drowned out by the piercing electronic shriek.

On the stage, Leo gripped the edges of the wooden podium tightly, his eyes scanning the crowd below to ensure nobody was getting trampled in the rush. Maya quickly scrambled up the steps to his side, her face pale in the flashing red light.

"That's not a drill," Maya yelled over the noise, pointing toward the digital security console near the AV booth. "Someone just manually pulled the pull station in the basement hallway!"

"Who would trigger a false alarm right now?" Leo asked, his brow furrowing as he balanced firmly on his crutches.

"Same person who wants everyone out of the main building," a familiar, raspy voice answered from the shadowy wings behind the stage curtains.

Leo spun around, his crutches scraping against the wooden boards. Stepping out from behind the heavy velvet drapes was Marcus, wearing a visitor's badge over a civilian jacket. He looked ragged, dark circles carved deep beneath his eyes, his posture defeated yet carrying a manic, desperate edge.

"Marcus? You're supposed to be under house arrest pending your sentencing," Leo said, his voice sharp and defensive as he shifted his weight to block Maya from the intruder.

"My lawyers cut a deal for supervised movement while the federal appeal goes through," Marcus laughed bitterly, taking a slow step toward them. "You think you won the war, Leo? You just destroyed my family's legacy for a high school trophy. My dad's business partners are coming after everyone who signed those audit affidavits."

"Nobody is coming after anyone, Marcus. Your father's empire is gone because it was built on fraud," Leo stated calmly, refusing to back down an inch. "Turning up here to pull fire alarms isn't going to change a federal indictment."

Marcus lunged forward, not toward Leo, but toward the master control panel mounted on the back wall of the stage—the system that controlled the digital locks on every exterior door in the entire school building.
