Chapter 2: The Correction

The heavy acoustic feedback of the microphone shrieked through the gymnasium speakers, causing several students in the front row to wince and cover their ears. Sarah stood under the glaring spotlight, her fingers trembling slightly as she unfolded a thick piece of official stationery. Her eyes scanned the printed text, flicking briefly toward the bleachers where Leo was slowly, painfully pushing himself up onto his elbows. The murmur of the crowd died down into a suffocating silence as everyone waited for the anticipated announcement of Chad’s victory.
"The recipient of the 2024 Oakridge Science Fellowship," Sarah began, her voice echoing clearly through the vaulted ceiling, "is not the candidate originally announced on the preliminary draft."
A collective murmur rippled through the bleachers. Chad froze, his hand still clutching the papers he had just pulled from the golden envelope. His blue eyes widened in sudden disbelief as his brain scrambled to process Sarah's words. He looked down at the letter in his hand, reading the bold black print stamped across the top of the page. It wasn't a confirmation of his win. It was a formal notification of disqualification due to academic plagiarism.
"Wait, that's a mistake," Chad muttered loudly, taking a half-step down the bleachers, his face turning an angry, splotchy crimson. "Check the list again, Sarah! There's been a mistake!"
Sarah did not flinch. She kept her eyes fixed firmly on the second page of the document, her expression completely neutral. "The award, along with a full four-year research grant to the state institute, is awarded to Leo Vance."
The gymnasium erupted into chaos. A few students near the back started clapping, while others whispered fiercely, pulling out their phones to capture Chad’s spectacular public meltdown. On the gym floor, Leo finally managed to grab one of his fallen crutches. He used it to haul himself up, his breathing heavy and uneven. He stood there, leaning heavily on the aluminum frame, looking up at the stage and then toward Chad. The bully stood rooted to the spot, surrounded by dozens of raised smartphones capturing every twitch of his humiliated face. Chad’s knuckles turned white as he crushed the official papers in his fist, his carefully constructed social hierarchy crumbling around him in real time. He took a sudden, aggressive step forward, raising his fist as if he meant to charge down the bleachers and finish what he started, but the sharp flash of a teacher's camera from the sidelines stopped him dead in his tracks. Principal Miller emerged from behind the AV cart, his face dark with fury as he pointed a stern finger straight at Chad.

"Mr. Miller, this is rigged!" Chad screamed, his voice cracking with panic as the reality of his ruined reputation began to set in.
Principal Miller marched directly up the bleacher steps, ignoring Chad entirely as he approached Leo. The principal placed a gentle, supportive hand on Leo’s shoulder, guiding him toward the steps leading up to the stage. Chad stood abandoned on the middle tier, clutching the ruined papers as the entire student body stared directly at him with undisguised contempt.
