Chapter 9 - The Fitting That Must Be Finished

The heavy silence inside the boutique was punctuated only by the distant, rhythmic hum of police radios echoing from the street outside. Victoria stood frozen, staring at the exquisite bridal gown that Martha held out in her scarred, steady hands. The dark pearls caught the red and blue flashing lights from the police cruisers, casting a surreal, melancholic glow across the room.

"Put it on, Victoria," Martha said, her voice softer now, stripped of its previous razor-sharp edge.

Victoria blinked, taking an involuntary step back. Her mind struggled to process the surreal request.

"Put it on?" Victoria repeated, her voice cracking slightly. "Your daughter died in this dress... or one just like it. Why would you ever ask me to wear it, especially now?"

Martha gently smoothed a fold of the abyssal silk, the blue LED lights pulsing gently against her knuckles.

"Because my daughter never got to walk down the aisle," Martha answered, her glowing blue robotic eyes softening just a fraction. "She never got to face the truth of the world she was entering. You are your father's daughter, Victoria, but you are standing at a crossroads. You can either let the sins of the past consume you, or you can wear the truth and walk out into the light."

David walked over, standing beside his wife. He looked at Victoria with a profound, weathered empathy that hurt more than any curse he could have hurled.

"The federal agents outside are arresting your father right now," David said quietly. "Your corporate empire is gone. Your fiancé is facing decades in a federal penitentiary for financial fraud and cover-ups. You have nothing left of the life you built yesterday."

Victoria looked down at her expensive white designer trousers, realizing the brutal accuracy of his words. Her entire identity had been built on a foundation of sand, washed away by the tide of unearned privilege. She reached out with trembling fingers and touched the dark pearls on the bodice.

"If I put this on..." Victoria whispered, her voice catching in her throat, "...what happens to me?"

Martha smiled faintly, a sad, knowing expression that mapped the lines of her scarred face.

"You become real," Martha replied. "You become accountable."

Slowly, deliberately, Victoria unbuttoned her white designer blazer, letting it slide off her shoulders and pool on the marble floor. She turned toward the changing room, taking the heavy, breathtaking wedding dress from Martha's hands.

As the heavy velvet curtain of the fitting room closed behind Victoria, David turned to his wife, lowering his voice.

"Do you really think she has the strength to carry the legacy we left in the trench?" David asked softly.

Martha watched the curtain ripple, her robotic eyes glowing with quiet determination.

"She has no choice," Martha whispered. "The trial begins tomorrow, and she is our star witness."
