Chapter 13 - The Submerged Sanctuary

The vintage Ford pickup truck bounced heavily down a steep, overgrown gravel track that wound its way down the jagged cliffs of the Atlantic coastline. The salty smell of the ocean grew overwhelmingly potent as the vehicle finally came to a grinding halt in front of a heavy, rusted corrugated steel door built directly into the base of the cliff face.
David cut the engine, plunging the truck into sudden, eerie silence, broken only by the crashing waves against the rocky shore just a few yards away.
"Out. All of you," David commanded, grabbing a heavy duffel bag from the back seat.
Victoria climbed out of the truck, her abyssal silk dress catching the salty sea spray. She looked up at the towering cliffside, noticing old, weathered security cameras mounted discreetly among the ivy.
"What is this place?" Agent Miller asked, keeping his hand near his holster as he stepped out of the truck bed, eyeing David and Martha with understandable suspicion.
"This is Station Nine," Martha answered, walking up to the rusted steel door and pressing her palm against a biometric scanner hidden beneath a flap of rubber. "The deep-sea quarantine facility your government and my husband's corporation built to silence the crew of the Leviathan VII."
With a low, grinding groan of protesting hydraulics, the heavy steel door swung inward, revealing a brightly lit, sterile concrete corridor that stretched deep into the heart of the bedrock.
Victoria stepped across the threshold, her high heels clicking softly against the pristine white epoxy floor. The contrast between the rough exterior cliff and the high-tech subterranean facility was staggering. Lining the walls of the hallway were digital display screens, all currently broadcasting live feeds of the federal courthouse where her father's trial was slated to begin in less than an hour.
"They're stalling the judge," David said, walking ahead down the corridor. "Your father's legal team is arguing that the digital logs we released were manipulated by a rogue AI system."
Victoria quickened her pace, her dress swirling around her ankles. "Can they win that argument?"
"Not if we provide the physical evidence," Martha replied calmly, stopping in front of a heavy glass containment door at the end of the hall.
Through the reinforced glass, Victoria saw a massive, subterranean freshwater pool. Floating peacefully in the center of the pool was a series of connected hyperbaric survival pods, inside of which several elderly men and women rested quietly, hooked up to life-support systems that had been running autonomously for thirty years.
Victoria gasped, pressing her hands against the cold glass. "They're... they're alive."
"They were kept in medically induced deep sleep to suppress their memories and preserve the corporate secret," Martha said, her voice heavy with grief. "And my daughter was supposed to be the first one released before your father locked the control room from the surface."
Agent Miller stared through the glass, his law enforcement training failing him as the sheer scale of the atrocity sank in. "My God... this is a mass kidnapping on a geopolitical scale."

"And your father holds the master decryption key," David added, turning to look directly at Victoria. "Which means you are the only person left who can unlock the pods before the automatic purge sequence activates at sundown."
