Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault Beneath the Boutique

A puff of stale, chilled air escaped from the newly revealed floor compartment, carrying the faint, unmistakable scent of saltwater and old rust. Victoria froze with her hand on the brass handle of the boutique door, her designer heels glued to the marble floor. Curiosity, a fatal flaw she had inherited directly from her father, overrode her primal instinct to flee.
"What is that?" Victoria demanded, turning back slowly while keeping her posture rigid.
Martha did not look up from the open hatch. Her glowing blue robotic eyes cast a cool, sapphire beam down into the dark recess.
"It's the foundation upon which your entire family name is built," Martha answered softly. "You thought this boutique was just a high-end stop for elite brides preparing for society weddings. But every thread of silk in this room was spun from the salvage logs of the ships your father's fleet forced off course."
Against her better judgment, Victoria walked back toward the counter. Peering down into the dark opening, she saw a heavy metal lockbox resting on a steel shelf. Embossed on the lid was the crest of Sterling Maritime—her family’s exact corporate logo, stamped into weathered, corroded brass.
"That box was lost in the Atlantic thirty years ago," Victoria breathed, her facade completely shattering. "My father held a state funeral for that vessel."
"Your father held a very profitable funeral," Martha corrected, her voice dropping an octave, resonating with mechanical precision. "Inside that box are the unedited logs, the distress transcripts, and the personal video recordings of every soul left behind in the dark. Including my daughter's final message to the man who swore to love her before he cut her cable."
Victoria stared at the box, her mind racing. If Julian discovered this before the wedding tomorrow, the Sterling empire would collapse overnight. The scandal would not just ruin her wedding; it would land her father in a maximum-security prison for mass corporate manslaughter.
"Give it to me," Victoria demanded, her hand darting downward toward the open hatch.
Before her fingertips could brush the cold metal of the lockbox, Martha slammed the heavy steel lid shut with a deafening clang.

"You can't buy your history back, Victoria," Martha whispered, leaning forward. "And your groom is already on his way down here to see what you're hiding."
