Chapter 5 - The Weapon in the Pocket

The tension in the boutique reached a boiling point as Julian's fingers curled tightly around the concealed object inside his jacket pocket. Victoria caught the movement and instinctively grabbed his arm, her eyes wide with a silent plea.

"Don't, Julian," Victoria whispered urgently. "Not here. Not with the cameras outside."

Julian looked down at Victoria, his jaw tight. The pristine public image of their high-profile merger was worth billions, and a violent altercation inside a luxury boutique would destroy their stocks before the morning bell on Wall Street. Slowly, Julian relaxed his grip, pulling his hand out of his jacket to adjust his cuffs instead.

"You're playing a very dangerous game, old woman," Julian said, his voice dripping with venom. "Name your price. How much to pack up this dress, delete whatever digital nonsense you've compiled, and vanish?"

Martha stepped closer to the mannequin, her glowing blue robotic eyes reflecting in the polished glass of the display case. She gently brushed a scarred hand over the glowing blue LED lights embedded in the abyssal silk.

"Money? Your grandfather tried to pay me off with hush money thirty years ago while my daughter was still breathing her last breath in the dark," Martha said softly. "Do you honestly believe currency has any value to someone who has already lived through a watery grave?"

Julian took a menacing step forward, but Martha raised her hand. With a subtle flick of her wrist, the security shutters across the boutique’s front windows slammed down automatically, plunging the shop into a dramatic, amber-tinted shadow illuminated only by the glowing dress.

"What is the meaning of this?" Julian demanded, spinning around to find the exit sealed by heavy steel panels.

"It means," Martha replied, her voice echoing off the enclosed walls, "that the fitting is not yet complete. And neither is the reckoning."

Victoria felt the floor beneath her boots vibrate. A low, rhythmic mechanical hum began to rise from the hidden vault beneath the hatch, growing louder with every passing second.

"What did you do?" Victoria shouted over the rising noise, grabbing Martha's apron.

Martha looked down at Victoria's hands with absolute pity, her robotic eyes flaring brightly.

"I didn't do anything, child. I simply sent an automated broadcast to every maritime terminal on the eastern seaboard, uploading your family's confession files."

Before Julian could draw his concealed weapon, the heavy steel door of the boutique's back office blew inward with a deafening crash.
