Chapter 9: The Trap Closes**

A sharp click echoed from the doorway of the boat house.
"I must admit, Clara, you have your father’s annoying persistence," a familiar voice rang out over the crash of the ocean waves.
Elena and Eleanor turned instantly. Julian stood in the entrance, rain dripping from his tailored trench coat. In his right hand, gleaming under the faint light of Elena’s flashlight, was a snub-nosed revolver. Behind him stood Richard, his face completely devoid of warmth or remorse.
"Julian, put that down!" Eleanor commanded, stepping fiercely in front of Elena. "Have you both lost your minds?"
"No, Aunt Eleanor, we finally found our clarity," Julian said with a cold, mocking laugh. "Do you have any idea how much work it took to keep this family empire afloat after Arthur tried to ruin us with his righteous crusade?"
Richard stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the waterproof case. "Arthur was weak. He wanted to confess everything, surrender our family legacy to federal regulators over minor accounting discrepancies. He couldn't see the bigger picture."
"So you paid someone to steal my baby?" Eleanor cried out, her voice raw with fury.

"Thomas Ward was supposed to take the child to Canada and keep her hidden in exchange for his daughter’s cancer treatments," Richard said coldly. "He panicked when the state police set up roadblocks. The crash was an accident. But your miraculous return, Clara... that was a mistake we cannot afford to let live."
