Chapter 6: The Uninvited Guest**

The Vance Foundation Gala was Elena’s formal debut into high society. The ballroom of the Manhattan luxury hotel gleamed with champagne towers and society photographers. Dressed in a striking emerald velvet gown, Elena stood by Eleanor’s side, enduring the curious gazes and fake pleasantries of New York’s elite.

"Keep your chin up," Eleanor murmured beside her, smiling for the flashing cameras. "They want to see you falter. Don't give them the satisfaction."

Across the room, Richard was locked in deep conversation with several majority shareholders, his gestures sharp and urgent. Every few moments, his gaze darted toward Elena with cold calculation.

While excusing herself to the quiet gallery near the terrace to catch her breath, Elena was approached by an elderly man with silver hair and a slight limp. He wore a tuxedo that had seen better decades and looked distinctly out of place among the glittering crowd.

"You have Arthur’s eyes," the old man said quietly, stepping out of the shadows.

Elena tensed. "Excuse me?"

"My name is Marcus Reed. I was your father’s head of security before I was fired twenty-two years ago," the man whispered, keeping his eyes on the ballroom entrance. "I don't have much time. Your return has terrified them, Clara."

"Who? Richard?" Elena asked, stepping closer.

"Arthur discovered a massive embezzlement scheme inside the logistics division right before you were taken," Marcus said hurriedly, handing her a small, rusted brass key. "Thomas Ward didn't kidnap you. He was trying to save you. Look in the old boat house at the Maine property. Arthur left an insurance policy."

Before Elena could ask another question, two of Richard’s private security guards rounded the corner. Marcus slipped out through the terrace doors, disappearing into the rainy Manhattan night.
