Chapter 2: Whispers in the Back Room**

The sharp sound of shattered porcelain brought the restaurant manager rushing forward. "Elena! What is the meaning of this?" Mr. Henderson hissed, glaring at the broken china before shifting his tone into smooth subservience for Eleanor. "Mrs. Vance, I am so dreadfully sorry. I will have this server dismissed immediately."

"Touch her, Henderson, and I will buy this building by midnight just to fire you," Eleanor’s voice turned from fragile to razor-sharp steel in an instant. She rose from her seat, still holding tight to Elena’s wrist. "We need a private room. Now."

Elena felt numb. Her coworkers peered through the service doors, their whispers buzzing like hornets. In the manager's private office, Eleanor closed the door, sealing out the noise of the elite world outside.

"Look at me, please," Eleanor begged, stepping closer. "Your name isn't just Elena, is it? You grew up in St. Jude’s Home in Chicago."

Elena stepped back, her pulse pounding in her ears. "How do you know that? Who are you?"

Eleanor held up the twin lockets side by side. They weren't just similar; they were halves of a bespoke commission. Eleanor pressed the tiny spring latch on her own, revealing a photograph of a newborn baby girl with vivid brown eyes.

"Twenty-two years ago, you were taken from our summer home in Maine," Eleanor said, tears falling freely. "The police told us it was a kidnapping for ransom that went wrong. When the car crashed near the river, they found no body. Everyone told me to mourn and move on. But a mother knows."

"I... I have lived alone my whole life," Elena murmured, tears blurring her vision. "I worked three jobs just to finish community college. You can't just walk in here and tell me I belong to a world I’ve only ever served."

"You don't just belong to it, Clara," Eleanor said softly, resting a trembling hand on Elena's cheek. "You are my daughter."
