Chapter 5: The Shadows of the Past**

Determined not to be a helpless bystander in her own life, Elena began looking into the past. In her spacious suite, she laid out old newspaper clippings from twenty-two years ago that Eleanor had kept locked in a private vault.
The official narrative seemed clean on the surface: *Vance Heiress Abducted by Disgruntled Ex-Employee.* The suspect was a former estate chauffeur named Thomas Ward, whose getaway car had been pulled from the icy waters of the Kennebec River. Ward’s body had been recovered, but the infant had vanished into the current.
Yet something felt wrong. Elena flipped through the old police statements. Thomas Ward had no criminal record, and his neighbors described him as a gentle family man with an ailing daughter.
"Looking for ghosts, cousin?"
Elena jumped. Julian stood leaning against her open doorway, a crystal tumbler of scotch in hand. He walked in without an invitation, scanning the old documents spread across her mahogany desk.
"You shouldn't dig up old graves, Clara," Julian said, his tone deceptively playful. "It brings up unpleasant smells. Aunt Eleanor was broken for decades because of this. Don't torment her."
"I’m not tormenting anyone," Elena replied steadily, meeting his gaze. "I'm trying to understand why a man with no criminal past would kidnap a baby and ask for no ransom before driving off a bridge."
Julian’s smirk tightened into a thin, dangerous line. "Desperate men do stupid things. Be smart, Clara. Enjoy the trust fund, buy some designer shoes, and let the grown-ups handle the business. It’s safer that way."

As Julian turned and walked out, Elena felt a chill that had nothing to do with the room's temperature. That wasn't advice; it was a threat.
