Chapter 3: The Estate on the Hill**

Within two days, the sterile results of a DNA test made the impossible official: a 99.98% match. Elena was Clara Vance, the presumed-dead heiress to the vast Vance Estate.
A sleek black town car carried Elena through the wrought-iron gates of Crestview, a towering limestone mansion overlooking the Hudson Valley. Stepping out, she felt smaller than she ever had in her life. The world she came from was one of radiator clanks, instant ramen, and overdue electric bills. Here, manicured lawns stretched for acres, and stone statues kept silent watch.
Waiting in the grand foyer was not just Eleanor, but a man in a bespoke charcoal suit whose cold gray eyes scrutinized Elena from head to toe.
"Clara, this is Richard, your late father’s younger brother," Eleanor introduced, her voice laced with protective tension. "And your cousin, Julian."
Julian, a sharp-featured man in his late twenties, stepped forward with a practiced, polished smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Welcome home, cousin. It seems miracles do happen."
Richard, however, remained rigid by the marble staircase. "A miracle, or a very convenient coincidence. We spent millions investigating false leads over the decades, Eleanor. You must forgive me if I find this sudden diner discovery rather... theatrical."
"The genetic confirmation came from three independent labs, Richard," Eleanor warned, her tone leaving no room for debate. "She is Arthur's daughter. Half of everything Arthur built belongs to her."

Elena caught the brief, venomous flicker in Richard’s eyes before he masked it behind a polite nod. In an instant, Elena realized that while she had found her mother, she had also stepped directly into a den of wolves.
