Chapter 9 - The Axe Falls

The sound of splintering wood echoed through the study like gunshots. With every heavy thud, chunks of mahogany flew across the carpet as whoever was on the other side hacked relentlessly through the reinforced panels.

“Julian, they’re breaking the door down!” Elena shouted from inside the chimney shaft, her face peering down anxiously into the room.

“Keep climbing, Elena! I’m right behind you!” Julian called back, shifting Clara’s weight securely in his arms.

He stepped into the soot-stained stone hearth, bracing his boots against the rough brick interior of the chimney. Balancing Clara with one arm while gripping the rusted rungs of the vertical iron ladder with the other, he began the grueling ascent. Every movement sent sharp stabs of pain through his shoulder, but adrenaline kept him moving upward.

Below them, the study door finally gave way with a deafening crash of snapping steel and shattered wood. Through the rising smoke, a tall figure in a dark trench coat stepped into the room, holding a heavy fireman’s axe in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other. It wasn’t Helena. It was Marcus, the family’s longtime corporate attorney and security chief.

Marcus looked around the empty, smoky room, his eyes scanning the burning curtains and the open fireplace. He walked slowly over to the hearth, raised his head, and shined a powerful flashlight beam straight up the dark chimney flue.

“Julian!” Marcus’s deep voice echoed upward through the stone shaft. “Come back down before you hurt yourself or your wife. Mrs. Vance only wants to ensure the family's assets remain secure. You can’t escape the estate grounds; the perimeter gates are locked tight.”

Julian paused on the ladder, his breathing heavy as he looked down into the dark abyss of the chimney. “Marcus? You sold out to her? After twenty years of standing beside my father?”

“Your father was a sentimental fool, Julian, and you are following right in his footsteps,” Marcus called up coldly, raising the pistol and aiming it unhesitatingly toward the upper darkness. “Drop the girl and come down. Or I will smoke you both out like rats.”

A deafening crack echoed up the chimney as a bullet ricocheted off the brick wall just inches above Julian’s head, showering them with sharp stone fragments.

“Move, Julian! Move!” Elena’s voice cried out from the top of the shaft.

Julian summoned every ounce of strength in his body, carrying Clara upward through the soot and ash until his head finally broke through the small iron exit grate at the top of the chimney.
