Chapter 13 - Blood is Thicker

The Land Rover’s tires screeched against the asphalt as Julian slammed on the brakes, stopping just twenty feet away from the two police cruisers blocking the narrow mountain bridge. The flashing red and blue lights painted the interior of the vehicle in dizzying, alternating flashes.

Sheriff Thomas Vance stepped forward from behind the open door of his cruiser, resting his hand casually on the grip of his service weapon. He wore a crisp state police uniform, his stern, weathered face bearing an unmistakable family resemblance to Helena.

Julian shifted the Land Rover into park, yanked the door open, and stepped out onto the damp pavement, holding his hands up where the sheriff could see them.

“Thomas! Thank God,” Julian said, taking a cautious step forward. “My mother tried to poison my wife. We need an ambulance immediately. Clara is in premature labor.”

Sheriff Thomas Vance didn't blink. He slowly drew his service pistol from its holster, pointing it directly at Julian’s chest with chilling indifference.

“Step away from the vehicle, Julian,” Thomas said, his voice deep and emotionless. “My sister called ten minutes ago. She reported that you suffered a severe mental breakdown, stole a family vehicle, and abducted a maid along with your emotionally unstable wife.”

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, staring at his uncle in utter disbelief. “You know what Helena is! You helped cover up her crimes twenty years ago! You helped bury the truth about my father’s first victims!”

“Watch your mouth, boy,” Thomas warned, taking a measured step closer, his boots clicking rhythmically against the asphalt. “You’re talking about the matriarch of this family. Everything we have, everything this county owns, belongs to the Vance trust. You don't throw away four decades of legacy for an outsider.”

From inside the Land Rover, Elena pushed the passenger door open and shouted out into the night. “Sheriff! She’s bleeding! If you don't let us through, both the mother and the child will die on this bridge!”

Thomas glanced briefly toward the Land Rover, then back at Julian. A cold, calculating smile touched the corners of his mouth. “Well, that would certainly simplify the probate hearings next Tuesday, wouldn't it?”

Before Thomas could finish his sentence, the sound of a heavy diesel engine roared from around the bend behind the police cruisers. A massive red fire truck, sirens blaring and lights flashing, came barreling around the curve, refusing to slow down.

Thomas spun around, raising his hand to signal the truck, but the heavy vehicle didn't brake. It plowed straight into the rear of the police cruiser, shoving the squad car off the edge of the bridge and sending it crashing down into the rocky riverbed below.

Behind the wheel of the fire truck leaned a local volunteer firefighter, waving frantically at Julian. “Get in your car, Mr. Vance! Drive!”
