Chapter 14 - The Final Verdict

The Land Rover surged forward through the gap left by the displaced police cruiser, its engine roaring as Julian shifted into top gear and raced down the highway toward the city limits. The wailing sirens of the destroyed police car faded behind them, swallowed by the roar of the river below.
“Clara, stay with me. We’re almost there. I can see the city skyline,” Julian called out, glancing anxiously across the seat.
Clara let out a low, agonizing cry, her hand gripping Elena’s arm so tightly the maid winced. “Julian… tell our baby… tell our child that we fought for him.”
“You’re going to tell him yourself,” Julian said, his voice cracking with emotion as he pushed the vintage vehicle past the welcome sign of the metropolitan medical center.
The Land Rover skidded to a halt directly in front of the emergency room doors, tires smoking against the pavement. Julian threw the door open, leaped out, and shouted at the top of his lungs.
“Medical emergency! We need a trauma team and an obstetrician right now!”
Within seconds, automated sliding doors parted, and a team of nurses and doctors rushed out with a gurney. Julian and Elena carefully lifted Clara from the passenger seat and placed her gently onto the medical cart.
As the doctors wheeled her rushing down the brightly lit corridor toward the delivery suite, a doctor turned to Julian, blocking his path. “Are you the husband?”
“Yes. Do whatever it takes to save my wife and my child,” Julian said, his hands stained with soot and blood.
“Wait here,” the doctor said simply, the heavy doors swinging shut behind them with a definitive thud.
Julian stood alone in the sterile, white-walled corridor. Elena stood quietly beside him, handing him a clean handkerchief to wipe the soot from his face. Minutes felt like hours as Julian paced the length of the linoleum floor, replaying every moment of the nightmare that had started in the grand hallway hours earlier.
Suddenly, the heavy doors of the delivery suite pushed open. The attending physician stepped out, pulling down his surgical mask. A tired, genuine smile broke across his face.
“Congratulations, Mr. Vance. You have a healthy baby boy.”
Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling the crushing weight of a lifetime of tyranny finally lift from his shoulders. He walked into the recovery room, where Clara lay pale but smiling weakly, cradling a tiny bundle wrapped in a soft white blanket against her chest.
As Julian walked over to touch his son’s tiny hand, a sharp knock echoed at the door of the hospital room.
Two federal agents in dark suits stood in the doorway, flashing gold badges.
