Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The crystal chandelier above the grand hallway cast a cold, blinding glare down on the polished marble floor. Helena stood towering over the wheelchair, her sixty-year-old face carved from absolute granite. Her dark hair was pulled into a tight, severe bun that emphasized the sharp angles of her jaw. She wore a high-collared black top that seemed to absorb the light around her. In her trembling yet firm hand, she held a small glass cup filled with a viscous, dark liquid.

“Drink it,” Helena commanded, her voice cutting through the silent expanse of the estate with terrifying authority.

Clara, thirty years old and heavily pregnant, sat trapped in the wheelchair. Her long dark hair was damp with cold sweat, and she wore a beige patterned dress that clung to her swollen frame. Her eyes pleaded in desperate silence as Helena forced the rim of the glass against her pale lips.

“Stop! She didn't do anything wrong,” Elena cried out, rushing forward from the shadows of the corridor.

The maid grabbed Helena’s wrist, her fingers digging desperately into the older woman’s arm to pull the glass away. Clara winced, a sharp gasp escaping her throat as a few drops of the dark liquid spilled onto her lap.

“You insolent girl, know your place!” Helena hissed, violently shaking off the maid's grip with a sudden, vicious jerk.

The abrupt movement sent Clara's wheelchair careening backward out of control. The rubber wheels shrieked against the polished stone. Clara grabbed desperately at the armrests, but momentum took over as she rolled violently down the sloping hallway. With a sickening crash, the wheelchair flipped onto its side, spilling Clara onto the hard floor amidst a flurry of scattered confidential papers and shattered glass.

Just then, the heavy double wooden doors at the end of the long corridor swung open with a slow, echoing creak. Julian stepped into the hallway wearing a sharp grey double-vested suit, a crisp white shirt, and a dark tie. He held his leather briefcase tightly in one hand, stopping abruptly as the chaotic scene came into focus.

Helena slowly turned around. Her stern face dissolved in an instant, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.

“Julian…” Helena whispered, dropping the empty glass as it shattered on the floor.
