Chapter 8 - Fire and Blood

The amber light from the courtyard grew brighter by the second, casting flickering, demonic shadows across the walls of the locked study. The sweet, chemical gas pumped through the ventilation system had dissipated slightly, replaced now by the acrid, choking stench of burning pinewood.

“Julian… the heat…” Clara murmured, her eyes half-open as Julian cradled her against his chest. Her beige dress was stained with dark liquid and sweat, her body trembling with a feverish chill.

“I’ve got you, Clara. We’re getting out of here,” Julian said, his voice urgent but steady. He looked around the room, assessing every possible exit. The main door was bolted with heavy steel from the outside; the secret brick corridor was blocked by Helena’s iron portcullis; and the windows were secured with motorized steel security shutters that refused to budge without the master control code.

“Mr. Vance, the fireplace!” Elena yelled, coughing as a thick plume of gray smoke rolled down the chimney flue and spilled into the room.

Julian’s eyes snapped toward the massive stone fireplace at the far end of the study. It was an old-fashioned hearth, large enough to roast a wild boar, but it hadn’t been lit in years. He remembered his father mentioning during a childhood game of hide-and-seek that the estate’s original builders had designed the flue with a wide maintenance shaft leading straight out to the rear garden, intended as an escape route during colonial uprisings.

“Give me your scarf, Elena!” Julian commanded.

The maid instantly unwound the thick woolen scarf from her neck and handed it to him. Julian grabbed a pitcher of water from the side table, drenched the scarf thoroughly, and tied it securely around Clara’s nose and mouth.

“Clara, I need you to be strong. We’re going to crawl,” Julian instructed gently, lowering her onto the thick Persian rug.

Julian and Elena rushed to the hearth. Julian grabbed the heavy cast-iron fire poker leaning against the stone mantle and jammed it into the mechanism inside the brick archway. With a loud snap of rusted iron pins, the damper gave way, swinging upward with a cloud of soot and old ash.

A rush of cool, fresh night air poured down the chimney, offering immediate relief from the suffocating heat inside the room.

“Elena, go first. Make sure the drop at the bottom is clear,” Julian ordered, holding the flashlight steady.

The maid didn't hesitate. She grabbed the edge of the stone ledge, hoisted herself into the dark stone cavity, and disappeared upward into the narrow flue with a muffled grunt. Seconds later, her voice echoed back down. “It’s clear! There’s an iron ladder leading straight down to the garden courtyard!”

Julian carefully lifted Clara into his arms, bracing himself for the agonizing climb. As he turned toward the hearth, the heavy mahogany study door suddenly shuddered with a violent crash. Someone on the other side was taking an axe to the wood.
