Chapter 6 - Darkness Falls

The sudden blackout suffocated the room in an inky, suffocating blackness. The only illumination came from the faint, silvery moonlight piercing through the narrow slats of the locked exterior shutters, casting long, barred shadows across the Persian rug. Clara let out a weak groan, her hand gripping the edge of the velvet sofa so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white.

“Julian… find a light. It hurts so much,” Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the old estate’s ventilation system.

“I’m right here, Clara. I’ve got you,” Julian reassured her, his hands frantically searching the top of his desk in the dark for his smartphone. His fingers brushed against a brass pen, a stack of papers, and finally closed around the cold metal body of his phone. He tapped the screen, activating the flashlight feature.

The harsh LED beam cut through the darkness, illuminating Elena kneeling beside the sofa, rubbing Clara’s cold hands to keep her circulation going. Julian swung the light toward the door, then toward the windows, before pointing it down at the fallen ledger on the floor.

“Elena, hold this light,” Julian instructed, handing the phone to the maid.

He dropped to his knees, snatching up his father’s handwritten ledger from the carpet. The flashlight beam revealed the final entry on the last page. Written in his father’s shaky, dying hand were the words: Helena administered the dosage to secure the primary holdings. If the child is a male heir, the bloodline must remain pure of outsider blood at all costs.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He stared at the page, the words burning themselves into his retinas. “Pure of outsider blood… She didn't just want to control the estate. She wanted to eliminate Clara’s unborn child before it could be born a legal heir.”

“Mr. Vance,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she kept the flashlight pointed at the book. “Listen. Do you hear that?”

Julian raised his head, straining his ears against the silence of the locked study. Faintly, from somewhere inside the walls behind the heavy mahogany bookshelves, came the distinct sound of a slow, rhythmic mechanical hum, followed by the hiss of pressurized gas.

“A ventilation override,” Julian said, his eyes widening in horror. “She’s pumping something into the room.”

Before Julian could stand up, a sweet, chemical scent drifted through the air vents, heavy and cloying like artificial jasmine mixed with bitter almonds. Clara coughed weakly, her eyelids fluttering as exhaustion and the strange gas began to take their toll.

“Julian… don't let her take the baby…” Clara mumbled, her head rolling to the side as her hand slipped off the edge of the sofa.

“Clara! Clara, stay awake!” Julian shouted, scrambling to his feet and rushing toward the bookshelves. He slammed his fists against the wooden panels, searching for the hidden lever his father had once mentioned in passing during a late-night drunken confession years ago.

His fingers scraped along the carved molding of the mahogany shelf until they caught on a loose book spine—a thick, leather-bound volume of corporate law. He pulled hard. With a sharp click, a section of the heavy bookshelf swung inward, revealing a dark, narrow brick corridor lit by a single flickering emergency bulb.

Standing at the other end of the hidden passageway, silhouetted in the dim light, was Helena. She held a gas canister in one hand and a heavy iron key in the other.
