Chapter 4 - Whispers Behind Closed Doors

The mahogany doors of the private study muffled the sounds of the sprawling estate, but the heavy silence inside was far more oppressive. Julian sat behind his massive oak desk, the briefcase he had carried home still resting unopened on the corner. Across from him, Clara sat quietly in her wheelchair, a steaming cup of chamomile tea warming her trembling hands. Elena stood vigilantly near the door, arms crossed, refusing to leave despite Julian’s earlier suggestion.

“Drink the tea, Clara. It’s safe,” Julian said softly, his voice losing its corporate edge when addressing his wife.

Clara took a small sip, her dark eyes staring vacantly into the amber liquid. “She hates me, Julian. She has hated me since the day you brought me to this house. To her, I am nothing more than an orphan from a modest background who trapped the golden boy of the Vance family.”

“She doesn't matter anymore,” Julian replied, though the lack of conviction in his own voice betrayed him. He rubbed his temples, feeling a throbbing headache building behind his eyes. “I spoke with the private lab downtown. They can analyze the handkerchief sample by morning. If Mother gave you anything harmful, I will have her removed from this estate before dawn, court order or not.”

“You can’t do that, Mr. Vance,” Elena interjected quietly from the doorway. All eyes turned to her. The maid uncrossed her arms and stepped forward into the dim light of the desk lamp. “Mrs. Vance holds the majority share of the primary trust. If you force her out legally, she will freeze the family accounts. You know how she structured the estate after your father passed away.”

Julian slammed his hand onto the desk, rattling the pens and the brass nameplate. “Damn the trust! My wife and unborn child were nearly poisoned in our own hallway!”

“And if she freezes the accounts, how will you pay for Clara’s specialized medical care?” Elena asked pointedly, meeting his angry gaze without flinching. “Mrs. Vance isn’t stupid. She doesn't use poison that kills quickly. She uses things that weaken slowly, things that mimic natural complications. I’ve seen her do it before.”

Julian froze, his hand hovering over the desk. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. He slowly lowered his hand, staring at the maid with sudden, chilling realization. “What did you just say? Before?”

Elena swallowed hard, looking away toward Clara before turning back to Julian. “Before you married Miss Clara. There was another maid, five years ago. She knew too much about the elder Mr. Vance’s sudden illness. She lost her child in this very hallway after drinking a similar dark tonic handed to her by Mrs. Vance herself. The police called it a tragic accident.”

Before Julian could demand the terrifying details of that buried history, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the heavy study door. The lock had just been turned from the outside.
