Chapter 7 - Sirens in the Rain

The piercing wail of police sirens cut through the heavy silence of the Grand Astoria Ballroom, bouncing off the crystal chandeliers and rattling the reinforced glass windows. The flashing crimson and azure lights painted frantic, chaotic streaks across the white marble floor, casting long, grotesque shadows of the elite guests who were now desperately trying to merge with the wallpaper to avoid being implicated in the unfolding catastrophe.
Arthur Vance’s hand slowly slid out of his coat pocket, empty and trembling ever so slightly. The ironclad confidence that had sustained his decades-long corporate raiding campaign had evaporated into the humid night air. He looked past Julian toward the grand entrance, where three uniformed police officers flanked by federal investigators were marching purposefully through the broken glass.
“You think the authorities care about corporate paperwork, Julian?” Arthur hissed through clenched teeth, his voice a venomous whisper meant only for his nephew’s ears. “By morning, every market index in the country will crash if these accounts are frozen. You’ll destroy your own legacy just to drag me down.”
Julian didn't flinch. He remained standing tall beside the black wheelchair, his posture rigid, defying the burning pain in his newly awakened legs. “My legacy isn't a portfolio of stolen shell companies, Uncle. It's the people you tried to crush. And unlike you, I know how to rebuild from the foundation up.”
Victoria, realizing that her powerful allies were sinking just as fast as she was, dropped to her knees amidst the sparkling shards of broken champagne flutes. Her designer gown was ruined, soaked in alcohol and stained with dirt from the floor. She looked up at Julian with wide, tear-filled eyes, her previous arrogance completely obliterated by the cold march of reality.
“Julian... please,” she choked out, her voice trembling with manufactured fragility. “We’re husband and wife. Think of what this will do to our name, our social standing. I was just... I was manipulated by your uncle! He threatened me!”
Sarah rolled her eyes, turning away in disgust as she held the medical file tighter against her chest. Marcus Thorne didn't even bother looking down at the pleading woman.
The lead police officer, a tall detective with graying temples and a stern, weathered face, stepped past the broken glass and stopped directly in front of Arthur Vance. He didn't waste time with pleasantries; he pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt with a sharp metallic click.
“Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit white-collar extortion,” the detective announced, his voice echoing across the cavernous room.
Arthur didn't resist as the cold steel locked around his wrists, but as the officers turned him toward the exit, he cast one final, murderous glare over his shoulder—not at Julian, but directly at Victoria.

And then, from the shadows near the service corridor, a terrified young man stepped forward, holding a crumpled flash drive and shouting a name that stopped everyone dead in their tracks.
