Chapter 3 - The Weight of Silence

The ambient temperature of the Grand Astoria Ballroom seemed to plummet several degrees as Julian’s quiet question hung in the charged air. Victoria stood frozen, her manicured fingernails digging into the fine fabric of her glittering silver sequin gown until her knuckles turned white. The elite guests, who had spent the last hour whispering behind their champagne flutes, now held their breath, realizing they were witnessing the public execution of one of the city's wealthiest dynasties.

“You’re bluffing,” Victoria hissed, her voice dropping an octave as panic began to fracture her haughty facade. She stepped closer, desperate to reestablish psychological dominance, but Sarah remained firmly planted between Victoria and the wheelchair, clutching the medical file to her chest like a shield. “You’ve spent eight months drooling in a corner, pissing yourself in a hospital bed, and whining about your spine! You don’t even know what a balance sheet looks like anymore!”

Marcus Thorne slowly shook his head, offering Victoria a pitying smile that only served to fuel her rising terror. “Mrs. Vance, ignorance of corporate law is rarely a viable defense in federal court, but willful, premeditated theft committed while wearing a designer gown under television cameras tends to simplify the prosecution's job immensely.”

Julian slowly tilted his head upward. The champagne had dried into a stiff crust on the lapel of his black tuxedo, but his posture—once slumped and defeated—had subtly shifted. His shoulders were broader, his chest expanding with a deep, deliberate breath that filled his lungs to maximum capacity. He wasn't the broken man they had all pitied during the cocktail hour.

“You always did confuse cruelty with strength, Victoria,” Julian said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room without a hint of strain. “You thought marrying into the Vance name gave you a crown. You forgot that a crown is just heavy metal if you don't know how to carry the kingdom.”

“Shut up!” Victoria snapped, her voice cracking slightly as she glanced toward the double doors, calculating her chances of slipping past the federal marshals unnoticed. “You’re nothing without my family’s bailouts! My father kept your failing tech division afloat for three quarters!”

Julian’s lips twitched into the faintest ghost of a smile. “Your father sold his remaining shares to me three days before his stroke, Victoria. Every penny your family spent this year was a loan drawn against my private equity trust.”

The silence that followed was absolute. Victoria’s jaw went slack. She staggered backward, her high heel catching on the hem of her gown, causing her to stumble into a towering display of crystal champagne flutes.
