Chapter 5 - The First Step

The murmur of the crowd died down to a breathless hush as every eye in the grand ballroom locked onto the wheelchair. Victoria’s breath came in shallow, ragged gasps, her glittering silver gown reflecting the harsh, unforgiving glare of the overhead chandeliers. The veneer of untouchable high-society royalty had been completely stripped away, leaving her standing alone among a sea of shattered crystal and averted gazes.

Julian’s face remained an impenetrable mask of cold resolution. He slowly placed both palms flat against the padded armrests of the wheelchair. The dark fabric of his tuxedo strained slightly across his shoulders as he engaged his core muscles for the first time in nearly three hundred days. The nerve endings in his legs, dormant and deadened by a deliberate, toxic cocktail of pharmaceutical suppressants administered under his own roof, suddenly flared with sharp, burning life.

Victoria took an involuntary step back, her high heels clicking softly against a patch of dry marble. “No,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint hum of the air conditioning. “That’s impossible. The spinal specialist said... he said the paralysis was permanent. You’re supposed to be crippled for life.”

Julian didn't answer her with words. He slowly, deliberately shifted his weight forward, bringing his torso over his knees. Every muscle in his arms and thighs trembled with the immense strain of reawakening tissue. The physical pain was excruciating, a white-hot agony shooting up his spine, but his expression did not betray a single flicker of discomfort. He had endured far worse than physical pain during his long, silent exile inside his own home.

Sarah watched him with fierce, unwavering loyalty, her hands gripping the medical file tight against her chest. Marcus Thorne stood at strict attention, his briefcase held like a general's standard, guarding the perimeter against any interference from Victoria's remaining loyalists in the room.

With a slow, agonizingly controlled push, Julian extended his elbows and lifted his hips clear of the leather seat. For three seconds, he stood suspended on his own two feet, towering over the terrified woman who had tried to bury him.

Victoria let out a sharp, choked gasp of pure terror, her knees buckling slightly as the sheer reality of what she was witnessing finally shattered her mind.

Julian looked down at her, his eyes cold as arctic ice, and spoke the words that would seal her doom.

“I was going to tell you tonight,” Julian whispered. “Right before you poured that champagne.”

Before Victoria could find her voice to scream, the heavy glass doors of the ballroom blew wide open again, revealing an entirely unexpected visitor standing in the rain.
