Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The cascading crash of a thousand breaking crystal glasses shattered the tense silence of the ballroom like a bomb going off. Dozens of delicate flutes exploded across the marble floor, raining sparkling shards over the hem of Victoria’s glittering silver gown. She caught herself against the edge of a mahogany cocktail table, her chest heaving beneath the sequins, her perfectly styled blonde hair coming loose in frantic wisps around her flushed face. The socialites who had fawned over her just minutes ago now retreated in unison, clearing a wide circle around her as if she were carrying a contagious plague.
Marcus didn't blink at the noise. He simply stepped over a glittering shard of glass, keeping his briefcase raised slightly as he addressed the room at large. “As legal counsel for Vance Global Holdings, I am officially declaring Victoria Vance persona non grata across all corporate holdings, residential properties, and subsidiary accounts effective immediately. Any financial institution or individual assisting in the concealment of these assets will face immediate federal indictment.”
Victoria spun around, her eyes wide with unadulterated fury and sudden, crushing desperation. She pointed a trembling, diamond-ringed finger directly at Marcus, then whipped her gaze toward Sarah, who stood unflinching beside the wheelchair.
“You two planned this!” Victoria shrieked, her regal composure finally snapping into jagged pieces. “You pathetic little corporate parasite!” she spat at Sarah. “And you—!” She turned her venomous glare back toward Julian, her voice rising to a frantic, ugly pitch. “You lying, manipulative piece of garbage! You sat in that chair like a vegetable for months just to trap me! You wanted this! You wanted to watch me destroy myself!”
Julian watched her frantic meltdown with an unnerving, clinical detachment. He didn't blink, nor did he raise his voice to match her hysteria. The contrast between her shrieking panic and his absolute, terrifying stillness made every observer in the room instinctively step back.
“I didn't have to trap you, Victoria,” Julian said quietly, his words cutting through her screaming like a laser. “I just had to give you enough rope. You tied the knot all by yourself.”
Sarah shifted slightly, opening the thick manila folder just enough to expose the first page of the medical diagnostic reports. The hospital letterhead gleamed in the harsh ballroom light: Metropolitan Neurological Institute.
“Sir,” Sarah said, her voice steady and clear as she addressed Julian directly, ignoring Victoria entirely. “The attending neurologist has signed off on the physical therapy compliance clearance. The motor cortex pathways are fully restored.”

Victoria froze mid-gesture. Her breath hitched in her throat. She slowly lowered her shaking hand, her eyes darting from Sarah’s face down to Julian’s legs.
