Chapter 10 - Flashing Bullets and Blind Clicks

The staccato bursts of camera flashes erupted from the service corridor like a string of firecrackers, illuminating the dark, rain-streaked windows and flooding the ballroom with blinding white light. Investigative journalists and financial reporters, tipped off by an anonymous source within Marcus Thorne’s firm, surged past the hesitant hotel security guards. Their microphones were thrust forward, capturing every agonizing detail of Victoria Vance’s humiliating descent from high-society royalty to a disgraced criminal sitting in a puddle of spilled champagne.
Victoria threw her hands over her face, screaming hysterically as the harsh lenses captured the tear-streaked ruins of her makeup, the dirt-stained fabric of her once-pristine glittering silver gown, and the humiliating reality of her absolute ruin.
“Get those cameras out of my face!” Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking into a jagged, ugly wail as she tried to crawl behind a mahogany pillar. “Don't look at me! Turn those off!”
None of the reporters listened. They hurled rapid-fire questions across the room, their voices overlapping in a chaotic wall of sound.
“Mrs. Vance, is it true you embezzled forty million dollars from the foundation?”
“Mr. Vance, how long have you been faking your paralysis to trap your wife?”
“Mr. Thorne, will the federal government seize the offshore accounts in Zurich?”
Julian stood completely unmoved amid the media frenzy. He didn't flinch from the blinding flashes, nor did he offer the reporters a triumphant grin. He simply stood tall, his posture an unyielding monument of strength, flanked by Sarah, who held the vital medical files, and Aunt Eleanor, whose cane tapped rhythmically against the floor as she commanded the space around them.
Marcus Thorne stepped forward, raising his hand to silence the press corps with practiced authority. “A formal press briefing will be held tomorrow morning at nine sharp at the Vance Global headquarters downtown. All digital ledgers, court-certified indictments, and audit reports will be made available to the public record at that time. For tonight, this private event is concluded.”
The federal marshals hauled Arthur Vance to his feet, dragging the sputtering, furious older man toward the service exit as he cursed his nephew’s name into the flashing lenses. Leo, the terrified IT worker, was escorted out under protective custody to secure his status as a cooperating federal witness.
Victoria remained crumpled on the floor, abandoned by every ally she had ever manipulated, realizing too late that her ruthless ambition had been her own executioner.
Julian turned slowly away from her, his newly healed legs carrying him with smooth, deliberate strides toward the grand double doors. He didn't look back once.
As he crossed the threshold into the cool, rain-washed night air, Sarah hurried after him, holding out a secure satellite phone with a blinking red light.

“Sir,” Sarah said urgently, her breath misting in the night air. “You need to take this call immediately. The Zurich central bank is trying to connect.”
