Chapter 14 - The Override

The green glow of the dashboard display illuminated Julian’s sharp, unyielding features as the terminal interface instantly locked Christian out of the mainframe. On the live video feed, Christian’s confident smirk vanished completely, replaced by a mask of frantic, sweating panic as his dual monitors flickered black and then flashed a stark, bold warning: ACCESS DENIED. BIOMETRIC LOCK ENGAGED.
“What? No, no, no!” Christian shouted at his screen, slamming his fists onto the mahogany desk as he desperately tried to input manual override commands that no longer existed. “That’s impossible! I bypassed the master protocol yesterday!”
“You bypassed a decoy protocol I set up specifically to catch rats like you,” Julian said smoothly into the comm-link, his voice echoing through the car’s speakers with absolute dominance. “Every keystroke you entered over the last twenty minutes has been logged, timestamped, and automatically forwarded to the federal cyber-crimes division.”
Christian jumped out of the executive chair, rushing toward the penthouse windows as if contemplating jumping, before spinning around to face the hidden camera with wide, bloodshot eyes. “Julian, wait! We’re family! Victoria made me do it! She promised me half the European holdings if I locked you out of the network!”
“Family doesn't poison your morning coffee with neural toxins, Christian,” Julian replied coldly. He pressed a single button on the car’s console, terminating the video feed with a sharp digital beep. The screen went dark, plunging the interior back into quiet shadow.
Julian turned his head toward the window as the town car pulled smoothly away from the Grand Astoria Ballroom, accelerating into the rainy night toward the downtown financial district.
“Marcus,” Julian said without looking back.
“Yes, Mr. Vance?” the accountant replied instantly, straightening his tie.
“Have the federal marshals waiting in the penthouse lobby when we arrive. I want Christian escorted out in the exact same cuffs our dear uncle is wearing.”
“Consider it done, sir,” Marcus said, a rare, satisfied smile touching the corners of his mouth.
Aunt Eleanor leaned back against her seat, closing her eyes with a quiet sigh of profound relief. “Your father would have been proud of you today, Julian. You didn't just survive their trap; you turned their own greed into a noose.”
Julian didn't answer right away. He looked down at his hands, remembering the months of forced paralysis, the silent humiliation of sitting in that wheelchair while the people he loved most plotted his destruction. The physical weakness was gone, replaced by an unbreakable resolve.
As the town car slowed to a halt in front of the towering, glass-and-steel monolith of Vance Global Headquarters, the front doors swung open to reveal a dozen federal agents standing in the rain, ready to finish what Julian had started.

But as Julian opened the car door and placed his foot firmly on the wet pavement, his phone buzzed with one final, unexpected message from an unknown number.
