Chapter 2 - The Audit of Vengeance

The heavy wooden doors of the ballroom slammed back against the mahogany pillars, silencing the remaining murmurs of the elite crowd. Marcus Thorne, senior partner of the city’s most feared forensic accounting firm, stepped into the light. He wore a razor-sharp charcoal suit, and behind him walked two federal marshals carrying thick ledgers bound in red tape. Victoria’s triumphant smirk flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a sudden, cold knot of unease in her stomach. She knew Marcus Thorne. He only represented entities capable of destroying sovereign wealth funds overnight.
“Step aside, please,” Marcus said, his voice deep and emotionless. He marched past the frozen guests directly toward the raised dais where Julian sat drenched in champagne. To the utter shock of everyone present, Marcus bypassed Victoria entirely, stopped two feet in front of the wheelchair, and dropped into a stiff, respectful bow. The gesture sent a tremor through the room. Victoria’s diamond earrings clicked against her collarbone as she turned sharply, her glittering silver gown rustling in protest.
“What is the meaning of this interruption, Marcus?” Victoria demanded, trying to inject royal authority back into her tone. “This is a private charity gala for the Vance Foundation. Remove these men immediately.”
Marcus did not even glance at her. He kept his eyes locked on Julian, whose tuxedo shirt remained stained with golden champagne. “The audit is complete, Mr. Vance. Every shell corporation, every unauthorized asset transfer, and every fraudulent signature executed under the Vance Foundation umbrella has been fully documented and verified by federal regulators.”
Julian exhaled slowly. He lifted his right hand, the one that had felt dead to the world for nearly eight months, and casually brushed a stray drop of champagne off his lapel. The small muscle in his jaw ticked. He looked up at Marcus with eyes so piercing and devoid of mercy that the accountant instinctively took half a step back.
“Did she sign the final transfer authorization this morning?” Julian’s voice was low, smooth, and chillingly calm.
“Yes, sir,” Marcus replied clearly, pulling a single piece of heavy parchment from his leather portfolio. “Victoria Vance personally executed the digital transfer of all remaining corporate liquidity into an offshore holding account. An account that belongs exclusively to a shell company registered under her maiden name. Which legally constitutes grand larceny and corporate embezzlement on an industrial scale.”
Victoria’s face drained of all color, leaving her porcelain skin looking almost ghostly beneath the chandeliers. She stepped forward, her heels clicking furiously against the marble. “That’s a complete lie! Julian, you pathetic cheat, you’re fabricating documents! You’ve been a useless invalid for a year, begging for my charity!”
“Was I?” Julian asked softly.

He shifted his weight forward, and a faint, metallic click echoed from the footrests beneath him.
